I remember that day, we were playing with my dad outside in the mists of day. We played for hours until we got the horrible idea of hooking a sled to a fourwheeler, and then disaster struck, we tipped and I went flying, hitting my head on a sharp object I couldn’t take in what had just happened, the sharp object had pierced my skin and blood was rushing out of my head and seeping into the fluffy snow. I remember the screams of that night, the smell of blood, the stained t-shirt I had worn, and the terrifying look of the room. We walked out of the building and climbed into the van and made tracks trying to get home. I woke up the next morning wondering what I looked like so I ran to the bathroom and yelled, my dad jumped out of bed and came running to see what was the matter and when he saw me looking at my reflection he picked me up and put me back to bed and said it’s alright it’ll grow back soon but the next problem we have to figure out is how we’re going to tell your mother. My mom took me to the doctors office before school had started and he took me to his office and he grabbed a tool that resembled a pair of pliers and started taking the staples out, I remember screaming because a scab had formed over the staples while we were playing leapfrog but it was over quickly and we went home and ordered my school uniform. My first day I was required to wear a ugly uniform and when I walked into the room people just looked at me but luckily after one year I went back to the backwoods and continued my life

I went on the other side of the school and hid behind a bench, on a bar, above a window well. Another hot summer in Idaho at another family reunion. I chased after my dad and brother’s cloud of dust; reving my ATV’s (all terrain vehicle) engine I whipped around the land my great great uncle homesteaded on.
