It’s not often I anticipate letters in the mail, but this was how our school notified students of varsity sports tryout results. Our school fields highly competitive teams in all sports and soccer ranks as one of the most difficult teams to make. My heart raced when I found “Riley Bonifer” in the middle of that envelope and the school address in the corner. My hands shook as I peeled back the flap for the good news. That exhilaration ended abruptly when I read the word “unfortunately.”
I literally could not speak as my mother looked on, knowing what the letter revealed. I was utterly devastated. 10 years of organized team play, thousands of hours

Playing soccer came easy to me and I felt at home on the field. It was an activity I have loved my entire life. I had assembled most of my friends through soccer teams since the age of 4. All my soccer memories flashed through my mind in those moments of silence.
The pain sank in deeper as this was likely the exact moment my career was over. In Michigan, there is no competitive soccer during the high school season. There is no playing on a B team or a Junior Varsity team. I was done for at least 8 months until our club team began in April of the next year. My soccer identity had been deleted from my life in one click
My mom asked ‘How could this have happened? I was part of highly competitive system and always played well above my age group. My throat grew tight as I had no explanation and could only shake my head in disbelief. Over the next few days I vowed not to speak about soccer.r. The school year had not yet begun, and I could hide during the time from facing a new reality. As the school year began and school work filled the void, the pain lessened somewhat. But I knew I had to face the question of whether to continue my career and tryout again as a

Even though it seems that I’m trying to laugh off the situation, I’m using humor to cope with how much this situation affected me because soccer really meant a lot to me. Playing soccer is one of the ways where I can be myself and feel truly happy and free. When I play I always know that I have a team that I can rely on to support me and they know that they can rely on me as a striker to provide hope when we’re losing and confidence when we’re winning by scoring goals. Soccer for me was a constant so having it taken away in a few seconds when it took 15 years to build the stability and skill was like a bullet to the…

My Last Soccer Game It was the morning of my last soccer game of the season. I still haven't made my first goal yet so I was determined to that day. As I got out of my car walked through the grass to get to my team and start stretching to prepare for our last game, the smell of wet grass hit me in the face. My soccer cleats began to get wet and sink into the wet muddy grass as I walked.…

The next day, we had another soccer game in the morning and I wanted to play, but, a parent on our team is a nurse and she told my mom that I needed to sit out and go to the doctor Monday because she thought I had a concussion. Monday came, and I went to the doctor and they told me I had a terrible concussion and should go to the hospital to see if my skull was cracked. Needless to say, the doctors found nothing wrong but a terrible concussion, and they told me I had the choice to quit soccer or keep playing and become affected by the concussion in 10 years, so, I made the hardest decision I’ve ever made; I quit the game I fell in love with at just 5 years…

It was a day in which we could go and choose our extracurricular activities for the summer, including sports teams. Elementary school was a time when if you could, you would try and do every sport they had available. I had gone with my best friend Morgan, tugging her along as we entered the building. Immediately walking through the doors, the huge aroma of baked chocolate chip cookies and various other foods drifted through the air and the sound of students cheering from the gym echoed into the cafeteria. Morgan rushed to the tables in front of us, scribbling her…
