A Tree That Dumb Driver: A Short Story

Superior Essays
You know, being a tree is not easy sometimes. Sometimes it’s a breeze, others it's a fight for survival (I hate you winter), but when you live in a redneck county with a bunch of dumb people in it, it’s not always a breeze. People would have more dignity you know? They always pollute, and throw trash at me. How would you feel if I threw stuff at you Sharon? When I was a young tree people didn’t throw stuff at me. Sure, people tried to cut me down, but the animals protected me (they are great friends by the way). I mean people loved me. If this is the last you hear of me I want you to remember that some stupid redneck killed me. I also do want you to remember that I will always live on in my legacy, probably though as “That One Tree That Got Knocked Over by That Dumb Drunk Driver”. I’ll take it though.
They are about to cut me down it looks like. I made one last call to Willy but he wasn’t there anymore. Then I realized, I was all alone about to die. I just want to go down as a legend and a friend, but mostly a legend.

“Yes Bob. Let's end this tree’s life.” George exclaimed with a evil grin on his face. That did not make me feel good.
Gee thanks guys for the support tree cutters. They then pushed through with the chainsaw and it wouldn’t cut. I thought I was saved until they got a better chainsaw and it cut right through me. That hurt getting stabbed by a chainsaw. I could feel myself leaning over, slowly but surely. I said one last thing and that's all I remember. Next thing I know, I’m up in tree heaven. Man, this is a great place! But that is where my story fades to black, both literally and figuratively. I will always miss Earth, but at least there aren’t any redneck truck drivers up

Who we truly are and who we are conditioned to be, despite being for the most part intertwined, tend to be incredibly different things. In the short story “The Half Husky”, written by Margaret Laurence, this topic, the topic of one’s true nature vs the nurture they receive, is thoroughly explored. Laurence suggests that despite the personality someone is born with, how they are raised and any significant early life trauma endured can later result in misplaced anger, devious behaviours, and a continuation in the cycle of abuse. Initially, the main character, fifteen year old Vanessa, was quite sheltered and naive.…
