Personal Narrative: Just A Dream

Improved Essays
I’m a slave in Virginia working as a cotton picker on my master’s farm. I work through the intense heat from the sun. From sunrise to sunset I work knowing that every time I mess up I get a lash from my master. During the nights, my slave mates and I dream of the life we could live in the north, but that's just a dream it will probably never become a reality. That was Tuesday. Now, after many nights of dreaming, I finally decided to leave this horrid place. Tonight when everyone sleeps, I will take my chance to slip away in the darkness of the cool Saturday night and head to Moncure Conway in the northern parts of Virginia. The journey wasn’t easy, especially since I was traveling through the dark. I was traveling alone and every step I …show more content…
I still have some food from my first stop, so I’ll have to make sure it lasts until I get to the headquarters. While I was walking I stumbled upon a wanted sign that had my name on it. If I don’t be careful from this point on I could die! I can’t let that happen. I’m on my third night I have to get to the headquarters fast. I made it and I’m safe, but I won’t be for long I have to keep moving. John Brown said I can stay at his home in Pennsylvania. It will be a quick trip if I run, but I don’t think I have enough energy for that so I’ll have to stay hidden as best as I can. John said if I make sure to stay in the forest and to away from roads or any houses I’ll be fine. I really don’t want to get caught. I should be extra careful. Pennsylvania doesn’t seem like a safe place for me right now. I better run the rest of the way to John Brown’s house before sunrise. John Brown’s wife is so kind she said I can hide in the basement until sunrise. She also said she’ll bring me some food and some extra food for my next stop, Bethel AME Church. The church is all the way in New Jersey. John’s wife said it will take me at least thirty-five hours to get there. Good thing she packed me some extra food. I’m in the north, so I’m a tiny bit safer, but I won’t be sure I’m safe until I’m far away from southern …show more content…
Just three stops away from a better life, a life where I won’t have to live in fear. My next stop Foster Memorial Church. Another church, but it’s safe and I don’t want to take any chance sleeping in the forest. All I have left is two stops, about one hundred hours. I made it to the church, but before I left my hiding spot I spotted a slave hunter. I have to be careful, I know that man, just yards away from me, is looking for me. The church should have a back door; I just have to find a way to get there without getting spotted. Maybe the best option is to keep going, but it might be too

I evoke waking up every 5 minutes checking my blue IPod to see the time. Every time I woke up I would look outside my gelid, frosted window and see the sky darken to a faint violent. As the sky lightens, I would awaken even more. Just as the clock hit 7:30 A.M. sharp my alarm went off, “beep, beep, beep” desiring that I had gotten more sleep. I had opened my eyes like I had 50 cups of coffee, and jumping out of bed like a deer running from its predator.…

A Taste of Domesticity in Stokes State Forest Throughout my four years of high school, I had never had a friend come back from a post-prom weekend in Wildwood and describe to me what sounded like a “good time.” The stories they told always had the same synopsis that centered around drunken fun and even drunker stupidity. Hordes of juniors and seniors slept in small dirty motel rooms. They spent way too much money on alcohol, and they often got swindled into paying hundreds of dollars to stay in an otherwise dirt cheap motel because no decent place would allow teenagers to party like they did. They sat in their hotel rooms and drank the beautiful New Jersey beach days away, waiting for the sun to set so they could continue their drunken…

When I am dreaming, I sometimes am not sure if I am awake or dreaming, but when I am awake I know I am not dreaming. In dreams, I feel like I am not in control of what is happening, I am the observer. I sometimes know I am dreaming because I do things I would not normally do in real life. In dreams, things do not always make sense, like a movie skipping. In real life, this is not the case.…

“Yes, everyone is okay” said someone in the crowd of people. “I need everyone to get in their cars and start heading North East to Maine and New York, it’s the safest place to be at the moment.” Everyone started heading that way but Collin, already stressed enough, had even more problems as the hurricane was coming in closer to the land of Baton Rouge. He needed to get everyone on the Southern part of the U.S to start heading that way as well. He knew it would be hard to do, but everyone was aware of the situation at hand and that they needed to get moving or else they would be in a heap of trouble.…

The only thing in the world that’s constant is war. It was an aphorism murmured in the sticky summer of 1864 as the Civil War tore America apart—and it was a truth that had only become more evident in my more than twenty years as a vampire. Every time I picked up the paper, there were stories of humans fighting humans: brawls on the streets of San Francisco, uprisings in India, insurrections all over Europe. And once blood had been shed and graves marked, they’d start all over again.…

As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…
