I jumped on the chance to spend time with my father before going away to college, so I hurriedly agreed to go. The trip was 2 weeks away and every day before the trip seemed to drag on. I was so stoked to be going on such an adventure I packed my bags a whole week in advance. Finally, the day of departure came, and it was time for us to load all our gear in my rusty blue Ford pick-up. Our plan was simple, we would drive the 7 hours from my home in Illinois to the boat docked at Hancock, Michigan. The boat was then to take us to the mystical Isle Royal. The car ride seemed to take ages, but we made it to where the boat was supposed to be docked, the only problem was there was no boat. I started freaking out telling my dad our trip was ruined, but my dad just smiled and told me to look around. I looked around, but only saw a tiny seaplane docked in the water. Then it all clicked, we were never meant to take a boat…He told me he wanted to surprise me with my very first ever plane ride. Believe it or not, at 18 years old I had never been in a plane before. We found a perfect spot within the first 20 minutes of looking, and set up our small tent. We unpacked and laid our sleeping bags in the tent and finally had everything set up. It was about 7PM at this point and we decided to go see what the small lodge by the dock at to offer for dinner. We both got a greenstone burger and were satisfied. We walked back to our tent and feel asleep instantly. We woke up to the sounds of birds chirping and the cold wet dew soaking into our tent. We quickly munched on some food and quickly got everything packed everything up, eager to start the day. When we started hiking my dad told me he had another surprise for me waiting at the dock. We hiked over to the dock and this time I saw a boat with fishing poles on it. My face lit up, we were going fishing. My dad booked an all-day charter fishing service to catch native lake trout. This had always been a dream of mine and it finally came true, I was about to fish for monster lake trout! We boarded the medium size sea vessel and the captain gave us a rundown of what the plan was. We were to fish off the island coast in the morning, take a lunch break, and then finally fish a small inlet. The captain started the motor and we spud off from the bay into the choppy waves. Once we hit the depth he wanted the first mate attached the downriggers to the
