I have been volunteering at Augusta University Hospital since January and never truly understood why there is a special place inside of my heart for kids, up until this encounter with a young girl. Before reaching the children’s department last week, I worked with adults only. Oncology left me drained and hopeless; while orthopedic trauma made me peeved at all these people being so shortsighted and lackadaisical to get themselves hurt. I entered the hospital not fully comprehending how the day was supposed to go, but it turned out better than anything I could ever imagine. Annabelle taught me that even a smile can make the most tremendous amount of change in a person’s day and beyond. I know I will probably never see Annabelle and her charming smile ever again, but one time was enough to mean the world to me. If I can strive to be like Annabelle and make a difference in people’s lives without even trying, maybe my life can be better impacted as well. Even the innocence and hopefulness of a young child who has been so more than I can imagine shows me that when I think I have it bad and I am complaining, thee is always someone who has it worse and is smiling. If kids can push through all the most undesirable times with more joy than average adults, than I can most certainly produce a smiling face to people because I will never know what that can mean to someone else. In the time of meeting, sitting at the fountain, and goodbye, Annabelle impacted me and I will remember that as motivation to keep moving forward because there is always someone or something to work towards. As Fyodor said, children have prodigious abilities that we as humans must treasure every single
