The Ghost of Golden Pond
We had waited all summer to move into our new home in the country. Mom and dad wanted to move us out to my grandfather’s land after he passed away last September. They thought the city was too hectic and crowded and felt the country would be the best place to raise their family. The sun shone through the car windows onto my cheeks creating a warm glow as we drove further into the countryside. Dust picked up in the air from the back of our family’s minivan as the roads diverted from concrete to dirt. Our bodies began to rock as we traveled through the twisty, grassy, forest green hills. A white-sided house emerged from the fields with an inviting red door. The house was beautiful, but modest, with a wrap around

It was the perfect night to snuggle in my bed and fall into a deep sleep. As always, I tossed and turned for hours, until the dreams came. I dreamed that Catherine appeared at my bedside once again, and reached out for my hand. This time, I took it. We quietly left the house, entering my snowy backyard, but for some reason, I wasn’t affected by the elements. We glided among the trees as if we were in a bubble floating among the snowflakes. Eventually, we ended up at Golden Pond. Catherine looked at me, and she smiled. I felt very comforted and happy in this moment. Then she began walking me into the water. Once my body hit the cold, icy pond, I suddenly realized, this was not a dream. I began to panic and try to break free of her grasp, but Catherine became stronger and more forceful, pulling me deeper into the water. Water began to fill my lungs as I struggled to be released. As I looked up at the surface one last time, I saw the outline of a woman looking over at me.Her hand reached into the water, and she began to pull me to the surface. I was eventually wrapped in a blanket and crying in my mother’s arms. Mom’s love won out that day Catherine tried to take me. After I mentioned my dreams to her, she started paying more attention to me and my life in this new place. I don’t think Catherine had a mom who believed in her, because if she did, she wouldn’t be all alone, looking for that special friend to spend her lonely days and nights in Golden Pond. As winter passed and the days became filled with sun and new life, I began to settle into this new place, and we never felt or saw the presence of Catherine Elizabeth Statler

Journal Entry 1 – Descriptive Entry (Act II - Proctor) Diary, Although I had promised myself to never open and write in this book again, I can’t help but feel that today’s events should be recorded in here so I can set them away from my mind. If the memories are remembered in here, I wouldn’t to hold remember them in my mind. I had just come back home after a long day of planting and tending the land. I placed my rifle down beside the fireplace as I was welcomed in by the wave of warmth, a distinct contrast from the merciless chill outside.…

Sometimes we look in the mirror and believe to think there is no change, however there is significant change over time. We are never truly the same as when we were infants, children, teens etc. Change can be seen through Erik Erikson’s psychosocial theory. To better understand Erikson’s theory they will be applied to examples found in the movie, “On Golden Pond” screenplay by Ernest Thompson and movie directed by Mark Rydell. The movie aids in reinforcing the ideas and concepts of Erikson’s theory by highlighting character growth and the true meaning of life.…

The hermit set out of camp at midnight, carrying his backpack and his bag of break-in tools, and threaded through the forest, rock to root to rock, every step memorized. Not a boot print left behind. It was cold and nearly moonless, a fine night for a raid, so he hiked about an hour to the Pine Tree summer camp, a few dozen cabins spread along the shoreline of North Pond in central Maine. With an expert twist of a screwdriver, he popped open a door of the dining hall and slipped inside, scanning the pantry shelves with his penlight. Candy!…

After putting on our bright pink leotards and ballet shoes, which trust me we're not the most fashionable, we went out to the car to wait on Dianna’s mom. I should mention it was still raining as if the earth would flood outside, this made it slightly hard to hear but we ran out to the car anyway. Me, Dianna, and Dalton bolted through the door, sprinting to the car that Dianna had unlocked with the small remote. The cold rain made the humid, hot day not feel as bad as the rest of that summer had been, which was dry and hot. When we got into the car we sat for a bit but then Dianna decided she wanted to turn on the music so she jumps to the front seat of the car.…

Absent from ‘The World of Pond Stories’ by Dr. Stewart Bitkoff are politically-polarizing statements that these days pass for mainstream discussion and describe the plethora media sound bytes that seemingly inundate my day to day life. In other words, reading these stories was a refreshing reprieve from the endless cycle of jingoistic and sensationalistic rhetoric. To further elaborate, I found at the heart of each story an open-ended reflection oftentimes, at least in my initial reading, an opportunity to reflect on human nature namely our relationship with ourselves, the world around us inclusive of all its denizens human and non. One thing which Dr.Bitkoff does and has done well over the course of his many books is to present the reader…

As we pull up to the large farm, I see the brown, droopy, crunchy flowers of Mary Jane’s once prismatic flower beds. I sigh. I love being here. As we drive to the back of the property on the meandering sludgy paths, I can see the old fashioned merry-go round that Dean used to push me on. I see the old dog that always greets us, and I see the dirty white building that houses our small fishing boat during the fall and winter months.…

I looked out the smudged window covered in fingerprints and smiled as we pulled out of our now empty driveway, getting prepared for the four hour car ride to the wild, open fields of Virginia. I dreaded the ride, but welcomed the adventure. I fell asleep and awoke again. I looked out of the smeared windows again, but this time looked into the fields of Virginia. The deer gnawing on the grass with the fawns, the big, bulky trees bursting with bright green leaves, and the birds freely soaring through the vivid sky.…

Reconciliation Interrupted by the faint sounds of birds chirping and grass swaying in the gentle breeze, the calming silence became a distant memory. As the birds flapped their wings, moving at the edge of the tiny meadow, from one tree to the next, they cast their shadows over the body of a small brown skinned, black haired girl. She lay on her back in the hilltop grass, facing directly up towards the almost blinding light of the afternoon sun. Her dark skin, holding a lively warm glow, reflected the rays of sunlight off of her quickly flickering eyelids. Suddenly, they were open, revealing her dark brown almond shaped eyes and her ever so slightly off white sclera.…
