Personal Narrative Essay: The Eighties

Improved Essays
When you hear the words “The Eighties” what first comes to mind? There is a good chance the first subjects that come to mind would be big hair, classic rock, sweet workout videos and clothes, and great movies. If I were to be transported back in time and be forced to live out the rest of my life in a time period, my very first pick would definitely be the eighties due to it being one of the most iconic decades.
Growing up, my father talked about how different it was back then compared to how it was in the early 2000’s. Being young, I never imagined exactly how different it could’ve been until I got the game Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80’s. Every day, I’d wake up, make my bed, then play it until I beat a song on hard. Some songs it would

The year was 2009 when I heard that Skid Row was going to play at The Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, and I was exhilarated. We ended up going and it was an amazing night. I even got handed a guitar pick from Dave Sabo, the lead guitarist of the band since 1986 mid-concert, which is a memory I will never forget. I have now been to three concerts now and Skid Row is a solid 2nd right behind a Drake concert in 2016.
When it comes to working out and workout videos, nothing beats or will ever beat the many Richard Simmons videos that I have seen. Back then, the shorts were super short and sweatbands and leg warmers were a must. Also, they were more focused on cardio and stamina opposed to the strength training and CrossFit that we focus on today. I could only imagine being in one of those videos and the joy I’d have participating in it.
Another great thing about the eighties was the movies. From Gremlins to The Shining, there were a plethora of amazing movies from that decade. Some of the movies that I have watched multiple times are The Labyrinth, Top Gun, Dirty Dancing, Footloose, and my favorite, The Goonies. With the overall culture and reputation of the eighties, I would have to make it my very first choice if I were to be sent back in

Think about the typical 80's "coming of age" movie set in high school. It opens by introducing the audience to the main character, usually not the most handsome, most popular or athletic teenager. He sees the most beautiful girl in the school and wishes he could be with her. Long story short, he gets the girl, loses the girl and some friends, gets friends back after much ridicule, and rides into the sunset with the girl. Well that’s how my story goes… sort of.…

In the 1800’s people were less considerate about things such as deformations. The people of the 1800’s never were judged for making fun of people with deformities. When Frederic Treves brought John to the hospital and when John started to say verses out of the bible that Fredric didn’t teach him.…

Maryland, in the year 1984. I was a 15-year-old teenager growing up in Reisterstown, Maryland - a town about an hour away from Baltimore. I was just like any other red-blooded American male teenager growing up in 1980's America. I liked video games and Pac- Man, loved "Star Wars" and "Raiders of the Lost Ark", tried my hand at the Rubik's cube, and was concerned about the USSR and nuclear war. Influence The right or wrong words that we hear in specific situations, from people who we love, when we are growing up, can be an important influence on the way we see the world. I feel graceful for all the people that I have met, because one way or another they are part of my life. One person has been a big influence on me, she is my mother, and the most important lessons in my life came from a trivial story. I was 16 years old cursing my sophomore year in high school. As a teenager in the 80’s my priorities were music, party and fun, though be good in school was only a way to get permission, from my mother, to do the things I used to like to do.…
