As soon as I woke up I was thinking about how this was such an exciting day for me and how I was so happy to finally be receiving my diploma. First step of the day was doing my hair and makeup in order to get in preperation for the night of my graduation. So when I first woke up I took a shower, and then I got out of the shower and blow dryed my hair. Once my hair was completely dried, I began to curl my hair so that it would stay curled throughout the day and if the curls fell I could easily fix them. So once I finished curling my hair and I let the curls sit as my mom sprayed my hair full of hair spray and never have I ever had my hair feel so hard in my life before. I can see that they feel the excitement that I’m feeling in preparation for the end of my high school career. They seemed to be thinking about everything that was going through my mind on that stage as if they are being reminded of when they were having their graduation and the accomplishment they felt. I felt very connected with my parents at this point and I could see that they felt the same connection with me. When I looked into the crowd I spotted my family sitting in the middle looking directly at me with smiles upon all of their faces which made me smile. Once I made eye contact with my dad and he knew that I saw him he began to make faces at me that made me giggle, which was not a good thing because I was sitting in the front row. My dad plays jokes or acts very funny when he is in a happy mood so I could see that he was happy and that made me happy and full of joy to see that he was proud of me. When my parents and I exchanged hugs at the end of the night I could feel how they were going to miss with the distance that would be between us when I went to college.

Although growing up in a household surrounded by Vietnamese tongue, my parents always made the conscious effort to ensure that I was becoming more fluent in English—as I read the Little Golden Books Series every night before I slept, watched the Berenstain Bears on the small, bulky cathode ray television before me, and completed numerous School Zone workbooks—so that I wouldn’t be a step behind my English-speaking peers once I was sent off to pre-kindergarten. I never thought much of it, but the idea of one day—in the distant future—walking through confetti with a cap and gown on and a diploma in my hand had always been ingrained since I was four. I knew that I was going to graduate high school and go to college before I could even use the…
