Eight-eighty-seven seventy-one,” Coach Morris said to me. “Look for the outside receivers and tell them to get out of bounds to stop the clock. If they don’t get out of bounds, hurry to the line and spike the ball!” After hearing those instructions from coach I trotted onto the field with 1:22 left in the Decorah football game. Whether working out in the summer to improve my skills as a football player or studying for a test, hard work always pays off in the end of anything you work hard for. Sometimes in life teenagers have to grow up and accept whatever life throws at them quicker than what they would like to. The players of the Patrick Henry football program knew that we had to begin the transition back to the winning dynasty of PH football through the 2000’s. Through both hard work in the weightroom and in studying opponents and ourselves, we have started this year undefeated at 12-0, won the NWOAL league championship, and hosted a playoff game at Big Red…

It was October 16, 2012. I was in seventh grade, just a boy to become someone or something. We were loading the bus with our two coaches, Coach Voss and Coach Larh. Coach Voss the offensive coach who liked to make us run, and coach larh, our Defensive coach who taught me everything I known about the defensive side of the ball. This was a big game for me and my fellow teammates this game was going to set the tone for the rest of the season to show that we can be successful.…

In sixth grade, I wanted nothing more than to make Lusher’s middle school flag football team. I had dreamed of being on the team from the very first day I heard about it; all of my friends were trying out with me; and we had grand plans for a year of non-contact, semi-athletic exertion ahead of us. Having been anxiously awaiting the lunch period when the team roster would be revealed, I was thusly dismayed, disappointed, and disheartened when my name was not one of the eighteen posted on the PE office door. My mother, in all her eternal wisdom, saw a way out of the pit of despair I had sunk into: Lusher was starting an Academic Games team, and she thought I might enjoy playing. I was more than somewhat hesitant; she was more than somewhat…

Fall in Oxford Michigan is all about high school football. Unless you happen to be in middle school which I was, then it’s about middle school football. I had never had much interest in the sport, didn’t even know half the rules, but Luke had been bugging me to join the football team that year, which was our 8th grade year. Middle school football in our county was divided into Heavy-weight and Light-weight. Heavies are anyone over 130lbs, the Lights are anyone under, and I weighed about 95lbs with sand in my shoes.…

It was a brisk fall evening with the sun just about to set behind a hill. I was 10 years old, playing in my third season of football, and my first ever game under the bright lights surrounding the high school stadium. The time had finally come, the lights had been on and warming up for several minutes, I was going to play a game under the lights on the high school field. My experiences that night were not forgotten, but today I couldn’t even tell you if we won the game that night. The lessons I learned that night weren’t about winning and losing, I had done plenty of that already in my life.…

The day I discovered rugby, my life changed. Learning to play rugby is more than simply learning to pass the ball or memorising terminology; it is about learning to support each other, pushing through hardships for the sake of the team, and working as a collective unit. Rugby is a state of mind: believing you can and doing what you must. Playing representative rugby allowed me to share my enthusiasm for the sport with others who share the same passion. I was first encouraged to try out for the Fraser Valley team and later on, I was selected to play for Team BC.…
