Imagine being a twelve-year-old girl coming to an unfamiliar place to start a new life in America without her parent. The scariest thing in the world is the unknown because she doesn’t know what will happen in her life and she doesn’t control of it. The feeling of helplessness and loneliness is her first feeling in this new country not being able to understand English, struggling to do homework and failing the test. I can’t explain how I made it this far in the past 5 years, but my guardian has helped me navigate the many obstacles in my path. I joined a program called Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps. This changed my life. This program trained me how to be a responsible person, to have confidence, how to delegate and be a motivated young lady. The class requires the cadets to present a topic about leadership to the classmates which improves my public speaking. In the last year of high school, I will become the class leader in charge 32 subordinates and lead them to become better citizens by proving that they have purpose, direction, and motivation. The most challenging part of the program is the PT session to lead the platoon to exercise. I was really nervous in the first PT session and made a lot mistake by calling the wrong command, but my army instructor Master Sergeant Baida didn’t yell at me and patiently taught me. He said, “ is not how much you can do with the platoon, but how to try your best to lead your platoon and not afraid your subordinate to make fun of you. He understands it is challenging for a language learner to lead the native speaker. His words motivate me to not give up, and climb up from where I fell down. This taught me not to be embarrassed about what I think may not be “good enough” but to put my effort into perfecting everything I
