When a fifth grader is asked what they want to be when they grow up, some reply with wanting to be a teacher or a doctor, but I was set on a something wetter, saltier, and smellier. I dreamt of becoming a dolphin trainer in sunny Florida, so while my family planned our spring break vacation to Orlando, Florida in 2011, I encouraged my parents to allow our family to spend a day at an aquatic theme park named Discovery Cove in order for me to get an experience with dolphins. They gave in to my persuasions, and we scheduled a day to experience this ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity. I had high expectations, and I would never have guessed that a kidney shaped, ice-cold pool where I would swim and interact with a dolphin would be the location where my hopes of becoming a dolphin trainer would be crushed. I woke up in a citrus smelling room, in between my two sisters in a semi uncomfortable bed and exhausted from the flight the previous morning. Strawberry Popsicle and salt water never left my taste buds since I spent all day swimming and taking advantage of the unlimited snack stands. I fed birds, touched stingrays, and snorkeled with various tropical fish, but I could not wait for my half hour at the end of the day to swim with dolphins. When it was finally my family’s shift, we walked what felt like a terribly long distance to the shack where we watched an instructional video and put on an extremely thick and artificial coconut scented sunscreen that was free of any chemicals that would be harmful to the dolphins.
