Taking The Training Wheels Off Taking the training wheels off, or doing something on your own for the first time, can be a daunting challenge. When I was five year old, I owned a black and yellow Tonka bicycle. I decided one day that I wanted to learn to ride my bike without training wheels. Unfortunately, I picked a day that my parents were throwing a block party and were too busy to help me, but that was not going to deter me. I decided to go and grab a handful of wrenches and take them off myself. Before I knew it, I was riding down the driveway alone. Taking off the training wheels is a big step in life. I'm not going to lie. I never followed football and did not know the plays nor fully understood the rules. When I ran track and began getting top in the state for multiple events, I started to think "why not try football?" Well the answer was easy, I had four previous concussions, but just like that day I took the training wheels off my bicycle, I was determined to try. I was recovering from a calf injury, but I decided to talk to my coach and ask if I could join the team late. I was thrilled when he said yes, but soon realized what a difficult task I was undertaking. Joining the team late and having no knowledge or previous experience in playing football was not easy. After a week into the season, I started varsity, This was a real confidence boost for me since I was relatively new to the team. Hustle, I knew would be the way I would reach that goal. State Track and Field Around this time last year, my brother, his 4x100 relay team, and hundreds of other athletes competed in Jefferson City, Missouri at the state track meet. The meet lasted for two days and those two days were completely opposite of each other. The first day was rainy and cloudy, there wasn’t many people there, and there wasn’t much excitement. The second day was nothing even comparable to that. It was sunny and hot, there were hundreds and hundreds of people there, and the stadium was filled with sounds of people yelling.…

Remember the last time you were at a casino and you heard all that yelling at the craps table and wondered “what are they yelling about”, but you never ventured over there because you are too intimidated by craps. You’re not the only one. I used to watch from a distance trying to figure out what was going on, people were throwing chips everywhere yelling all sorts of crazy jargon (“press”, “same bet”, “hard 8”, “odds”) all while the dealers are moving chips all over the place paying people and taking other people’s money. What a crazy and intimidating game.…

I did know that I was an easy quitter, but I really did not care; to be honest, it was kinda pathetic. One day, my dad came home from work and he basically took my bike out and dragged me to the park against my wanted terms. He held on the seat, as he told me to get on the bike. I began to ride and I started to wobble but he didn’t even let me fall once. I became confident that he would be there even if I did fall.…
