Personal Narrative Essay: Starting A New School

Improved Essays
It was August 10,1933, school would be starting soon. Stacey and I would have to leave Great Faith to go to Jefferson Davis Elementary, an all-white school. I felt anxious about starting a new school especially one where Stacey and I would be the first colored kids to go there. I still thought about T.J in that horrible chain gang and what they would do to him. “Cassie you’d better get dressed the bus gonna be here soon,” said Stacey. The tall, yellow bus pulled at the side of the curb and the doors opened. Faces of disgust peered down at us through the slightly tinted window. Stacey took no notice of them and selected a seat for us in the front. After we sat down a girl about my age walked over to where I was sitting “Move,” she commanded. …show more content…
Stacey and I departed to go to our first class. I had math, and for my luck I had it with Miz Lillian Jean. I tried hard not to make eye contact or in any way let her know that I was there. I grabbed a seat in the back row next to the window. “Today we are going to start learning about pre-algebra,” said the teacher as she set foot in the classroom and started writing something on the chalkboard . “We also have a new student her name is Cassie Logan.” She signaled for me to come up in front of the class with her. I hesitated a moment ,but then I stood up and started to walk to the front. Everyone turned their heads and followed my every movement. Out of the crowd I took a glance at Lillian Jean her face was blank with no expression. After I had reached the front of the class the teacher introduced me and I went back to my seat. The class seemed to take forever to end and when it finally did I bolted out of there and went to go find my next class. “Look who it is,” said a voice from behind. I turned around and became face to face with Lillian Jean and her bundle of friends. She had the biggest grin on her face as if she had accomplished something great. “What do you want,” I said. Her grin faded away slowly and she then replied, “I thought that we were friends.” “Well we’re not,” I replied. She started to turn red slowly and then grinned again. “Well, let me hold your books for you,” she said as she leaned forward and grabbed …show more content…
Davis writing the lesson on the board. As he turned around he made contact with me and asked questionably “Are you Cassie Logan?” “Yes’m,” I replied. He went to the back of the classroom and dug out some books from a box and returned to my desk. He placed the books in front of me. I glanced at the books then back at him. The books were all for little kids. “ I’m too old for these books,” I told him. A surprised expression came into view on his face. “ You don’t know how to read so you certainly cannot be able to know what the rest of their class is learning,” he said. The day went on longer than I had thought but finally the bell rang and we could go home. I searched around for Stacey but accidentally crashed into R.W and Melvin. “Watch where you're going,” Melvin exclaimed as he jostled me out of the way. I tripped over myself and fell on Lillian Jean who just happened to be standing beside me. She fell hard on the ground with a loud shriek and fell into large puddle of muddy water. “ I’ll get you back Cassie wait till my father hears that you pushed me,” squealed Lillian

The bell rang and the second quarter of my Kindergarten year at William Cullen Bryant Elementary ended. I grabbed my report card as I ran out into the light snow and spotted my mother's white 1997 Caravan by the stop sign, as usual. An enormous smile covers my face as I hop into the car, eager to show her I had prioritized my academics before sports, as she had asked me to. As soon as I was settled in, I handed her the envelope containing my pride. Proud of what I had accomplished, but to my dismay she gave me the “I’m disappointed look” and said, “Cullen”, her voice rising, “Why are there not one, but two threes on this report card?”…
