Personal Narrative Essay: Puttingneg City Library

Improved Essays
After the storm was over—a full seven days and six nights of being homebound—a group of my friends and I got together outside of the Puttingneg city library after the martial law was lifted and streets cleared. The library sat on three acres of land. It had a garden and beautiful pond with gold fish. The castle shape library had four towers and many windows. The building was made of marble bricks. As you enter the front entrance, the oval double doors was made of solid bronze. James, Cindy, Paul, and I stood there in our winter coats, gloves, and hats. In the parking lot stood mounds of snow from the street, clean up. I was getting a headache from the bright white snow. A shiver rolled down my spine, causing me to shiver. “I wish the summers in Puttingneg were longer. “Cindy sighed. “I know.” She shoved her hands deeper into her pockets.

Cindy was my best friend.

Cindy’s mother was the first woman mayor in Puttingneg.
While we continued standing outside the library, James, the librarian's son, smirked and said, “Do you know about the Shadow Snatchers?”

We all shook our heads. I had never heard of the Shadow Snatchers.

“Well,” James said, “my grandfather used to tell me the story of a mystical legend of people called the "Shadow Snatchers before bedtime.”

I was intrigued, so we urged James to tell us the story.

The Shadow Snatchers were a mythical tribe that believed in the ritual of snatching children's shadows. The priest would cast a spell over a sleeping child to steal his or her shadow when households could not honor an obligation. He would psychically take children from their homes to assist with the growth and protection of the tribe. According the legend, when a child became of the age of twelve, it was required that the parent sacrificed their child to the tribe for servanthood. The males would be required to serve as warriors and the female servant

Last October I participated in the Dartmouth Native Fly-In Program and while I was visiting I made a trip to the third floor of the Dartmouth library. I remember this experience quite well because out of all the wonderful memories I made on that trip, this was the one experience that had the greatest impact on me. I remember walking into the library where old, frail books lined the walls with dark, mahogany bookcases stretching high. There were antique lamps on the desks that let off just enough light for one person to study under and floors that creaked loud enough to draw attention to my friends and I. We finally reached the center of the library where I saw a bronze Native American sculpture that I recognized from a museum I have visited many times here in Oklahoma.…

In his play Where the Blood Mixes, Kevin Loring illuminates the origins and implications of the legacy of residential schools which remains prevalent in Indigenous communities in the twenty-first century. Loring strives not to diminish the experiences of residential school survivors, but to reconstruct how individuals in the twenty-first century view and represent survivors of residential schools. This goal is achieved through Loring’s depiction of characters that are sad, but loving and funny people with hobbies, people who are not consumed and defined by their residential school experiences but continue to feel its painful influence nonetheless. Loring presents the characters with charming yet heart wrenching humanity to illustrate…

Plato’s Allegory of the cave accounts for his theory of knowledge by showing how leaving ignorance turns perception into true belief. Plato’s theory of knowledge explains that perceptions of things are like the shadows on the cave wall and while the prisoners know a name for the thing, what they see is not true belief. The prisoners however know the names of the perceived things and while their reality is a façade, their soul knows of forms. I will explain how the darkness is ignorance, shadows are perception in the material world, how the prisoners had knowledge to begin with, and how they account for Plato’s epistemology.…
