Phoebe's Escape

My siblings and I had wanted a dog for years, and when we finally got one around my 13th birthday, we couldn't believe it. Our parents couldn’t keep us away from the puppy; all we wanted to do was cuddle and play with her. Upon my dad's suggestion, we named her Phoebe. One afternoon, after having her for a few months, I was sitting at the kitchen island, hunched over my homework. I could feel the yellow light above me giving me a headache, and my back ached from sitting at the table for so long. I could hear the clock on the wall ticking loudly.

"Okay, I need a break from math." I thought to myself, putting down the pen I had been clicking in my hand. I turned my head to look into the living room to see Phoebe plopping

I slipped the leash around my wrist and gave her a pet between the ears, feeling her fuzzy fur between my fingers.

"Aww, how cute! How could Olivia not like walking her?" I wondered as I watched Phoebe look up at me and squinted her eyes in enjoyment.

However, I didn’t mind doing the work because I liked getting some fresh air and anything that involves a bouncing ball of fluff is enjoyable. Also, since I had been taking care of Phoebe, my parents let her sleep in my room!

"Oh, I can't forget these!" I remembered as I grabbed a few bone-shaped treats out of the jar sitting on the counter. "She's well behaved most of the time with a harness, but we always see a squirrel and it drives her nuts. She is still a puppy, after all."

I slipped the treats into my back pocket and stepped into the mudroom where I pulled on a light jacket and slipped on my sneakers. Phoebe sat patiently, waiting for me to open the

I'm taking the dog out for a walk!" I called to my mom in the other room, as I zipped up my jacket and adjusted the hood. Phoebe stood up with excitement and her whole body moved as wagged her tail at me. I pulled the door open and stepped out into the cool air outside. "I'll only be out for twenty

(A playful writing influenced by A. A. Milne’s ‘Winnie the Pooh and Beatrix Potter’ Stories) I gaze from my window to see a slight rustle in the conifers, picking up my binoculars with curiosity I notice a wood pigeon fluttering about; my imagination gets the better of me, thoughts rolled into a story. I don’t believe in happy endings; but I will try and write something with a good end to it and no better way can a story be brought to life than through the antics of wood pigeons. There was a group of eight pigeons and in that group there were five males and three females; I know the odds are not looking good for all the males and some will miss out and, of course, it is generally the weaker ones. It was spring, that time of year when…

Hurriedly, I buckled my seatbelt, placed in my keys in the ignition, and adjusted my rear view mirror. It was then, I caught a glimpse of the Victorian mansion across the street. But after a quick scan of my surroundings, I quickly realized the vicinity was absent of any dump truck. So maybe they forgot, I shrugged, hoping this piece of logic would justify my actions.…

The first thing I noticed when I walked into Jasmine Middle School was how big the eighth graders were. I knew that in middle school the sixth graders would be the babies, but it was still kind of a shock at how big eighth graders really were; well, at least I hoped the kids I was looking at were eighth graders. If the group of kids hanging out by the lockers were seventh graders, then eighth graders must be huge. Luckily, after looking around for a few seconds, I spotted my best friend, Georgina Larson by the water fountain. She’s never hard to find, because her hair is light blonde, and she’s always wearing really flashy outfits.…
