Personal Narrative Essay: Orca Blue

Improved Essays
Quarter past the hour, the bus was swamped as a freeway at traffic hour. Orca blue had camouflaged the city; fortunately, accents of flaming red had made their presence felt. Furthermore, it was evident that it was playoff season. As game time neared, my cousin and I made our way to our Hotel. Just hours before puck drop, the rabid Canucks fans, delivered some rather crude looks as we strolled down Robson Street in our Gaudreau shirts. Moreover, we modestly smirked back, as our flames were up 1-0 in the series.

The horizon had been tinted in the colors of the wild orca, it was evident that playoff hockey was alive on the west coast. More importantly, we had reached the gates of the arena. Although we had arrived a mere two hours before game

In the novel “Orca Soundings” by Kristin Butcher, there is a group of boys who enjoy playing soccer in an abandoned parking lot. The group of boys all had tattoos, dressed in baggy clothes, and they only cared about themselves. Until one day when the group of guys were just sauntering down the street ready to play soccer, something made their stomachs drop. There was a newly constructed mall right where they played soccer. There was even a new convenient store next to it.…

It is hard to say that a game in the NHL has no effect on you in the playoffs. However, if there was it would have to be game one of the regular season. The game was the New York Rangers vs the Chicago Blackhawks, the pregame would be the banner raising ceremony for the 2015 Stanley Cup Champions. Then, after what seemed like a ceremony that took 2 hours long it was game time.…

So it finally snowed! I’m happy that it finally did and I built a snowman during the storm and it looks kind of…squared you could say. Since the snow is heavy, more of the leaves are now fallen off and it’s starting to look like winter. Today I went to my grandparents’ house to spend the few nights until thanksgiving. While driving out there, the corn fields and the bean fields were all covered with snow, you could tell that the deer were out and about since you could clearly see the footprints in the snow.…

I remembered walking on San Bruno Mountain as a six year old and seeing small, fuzzy blue butterflies fluttering in the spring afternoon. I thought about how lovely they were, and each year I looked forward to seeing them. However, as each year passed, I saw less and less butterflies. As awful as it was, I felt there had to be something I could do. It wasn’t until The Golden Gate Park Stewardship program gave me that opportunity.…

The first scene of the hockey game appears “discorded and inconsequent” (13) as players performed complex maneuvers for a person “who had never seen it before” (12). Essentially, the situation seemed messy to the first-time spectator because he never witnessed anything similar to hockey prior to the game; confusion consumed him. However, with a stroke of insight, “he learned to find the puck” (25) indicating the beginning of his comprehension. Once he followed the puck, he noticed the names of players and drew comparisons to their play styles. The…

The New York Islanders returned home early Friday morning from a physical - and some would say lucky - 4-3 overtime win in Winnipeg just hours earlier. They had just finished a brutal road trip through three time zones across Canada and despite a 5-1 record to that point on the trip, had clearly not played their best. Not to mention, Nick Leddy, Matt Martin and, as we would learn Saturday, Calvin de Haan, would all be banged up to varying degrees. Martin and Leddy would be well enough to return to practice on Saturday in preparation for a huge ‘four-point swing’ game against the rival New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden, an arena that, unbelievably, the Islanders had yet to visit this season but don’t mind at all. “It’s one of those games, almost like a home game when you come back.…

Fear not your best friend fear Eagerly waiting for the sound of the final bell ending the game, I limped back to the locker room ashamed of failing my teammates once again. With my jersey drooping below my knees, I dreaded every second of ice time starring at a swarming pool of merciless giants. Receiving the puck gave you the opportunity to score, but for me it meant running into a wall. Running into other players sent me flying through the air before gasping for air and landing dazed on the verge of unconsciousness. The condemnation of failing to contribute to my team or participating in the physical aspect of hockey reminded me I was in a dark world of self-loathing because I couldn't accept this fact.…

It was a blistering, cold evening as my dad and I neared the arena, and rows of cars blocked the streets as thousands of Rockets fans crowded into the parking garage. My first Rockets game was nearing tipp-off, and I was bursting with excitement as my dad and I piled out of his gold colored Nissan Titan. Wearing my white Tracy McGrady jersey that went down to my knees and blue jeans, and having my Rockets banner in hand, we walked down multiple flights of stairs to the bottom of the concrete structure.…

We stumbled one by one onto the ice. the cold air immediately stung my cheeks and numbed my toes. The other players were warming up; effortlessly weaving through cones and performing crossovers with such ease that it looked as if they were dancing the waltz in a ballroom, swiftly gliding back and forth, making sharp and precise turns, before lining up to practice shooting. A wrist shot, a snapshot, a slapshot a -the nets not over there -shot. In the locker room, everyone boasted to each other; “five goals seven assists.”…
