Centennial Quarry Essay

I never would imagine that being dragged somewhere by one of my friends would result in one of the most enjoyable days of my entire life. It was May 31, the first Wednesday after school ended when all my friends arranged to go to the Centennial Quarry. I had never been there before and was very anxious. I didn’t want to come because I don’t like trying new things. Eventually, my friends’ nagging won out and I asked my father to drive me there, barely three minutes away from my house. I thought where I was going was basically a large swimming pool, but I was in for a huge surprise.

As I was walking up to the desk to pay, my dad drove away. After I paid my six dollars to get in, I tried to walk in when somebody sitting on a chair requested to

This time, keeping myself up was much easier. I almost kept up with everybody as we all swam to the concrete stairs. Even the second time around, I was unbelievably tired but decided to power through the steep, plentiful stairs. After even more strenuous activity and aforementioned embarassment, I finally reached our chairs. I sat down, took a swig of my now disgustingly warm water bottle and caught my breath.

By the time about half of the water bottle was gone, I decided it would be a good idea to check to make sure nobody stole anything. I looked down at the sand. Sand encrusted flip flops, check. Since I no longer had anything to drink, I went up to the counter where they sold drinks and food.

I began to order, “Can I have a blue Powerade and a bag of Sour Patch Kids?”

“Uhm, yeah. That's gonna be, four dollars,” the lady at the counter answered.

I gasped at the exorbitant price, “What?”

“Six dollars,” she

I quickly followed, running off the board, jumping as high as I could. I remembered to plug my nose before I sunk down around 10 feet under the water. After paddling upwards, I eventually resurfaced to realize that everybody was watching me.

“We still aren’t completely sure you can swim.” Evan joked

“Well I can, so stop.” I embarassingly replied

“We’re swimming over there,” Dylan B. explained as he pointed to something over 100 feet away.

“Okay, let’s see if I can swim.” I teased

We all started swimming toward the Saturn, a round raft with a ring around the middle. Suddenly, I wasn’t slower than everybody else. I was actually faster than a couple of people. After about five minutes of strong swimming later, we reached the Saturn. It was unlike any raft I had ever seen before. There was a ring around it that was parallel to the water with handles for you to pull yourself up with. Inside this ring was a hemisphere that had matching handles. We all tried to pull ourselves up with only a few out of the five of us succeeded. I was the second on. Dylan B. and I helped everybody else up and leaned back to relax when we heart a whistle

It was a bright and sunny day and the time of year when we went to Shelbyville. This year my parents decided that I could take a friend so I chose Thomas Cahill. We picked up Thomas, got into the car, and started driving down to Lake Shelbyville. I felt a tap on my back, and jumped, as the diving instructor looked at me questioning, “Well, what are you waiting for? Aren't you coming?” In the single most courageous moment of my life so far, without hesitation, I answered, “Yes!” I pulled on my wet suit, which was still freezing from the previous dive that day, grabbed my vest, with an air tank and regulator, strapped on goggles and headed to the edge of the boat. The dive instructor handed me a flashlight, and with a big smile on his face said, “Lets go!”…

As I dive over the ice cold pool, dread and regret fill every moment until my body finally makes contact. For two, sometimes three, hours the situation will only worsen as I repeatedly raise my arms above my head and pull back as hard as possible. Weeks of this pass by, all for the sake of being able to travel through 100 meters of water a few milliseconds faster. Swimming has been my primary sport since the age of eight.…
