"One of the greatest discoveries a man makes, one of his great surprises, is to find he can do what he was afraid he couldn't do,"this quote by Henry Ford reconnects when it comes to facing something you're afraid of; our fears. When we get over fears, we realize only then that we had the courage before to do that something we were afraid of doing. One time I was afraid was when I started ice skating. I was at a party for my younger sister's friend at an ice ring.…

It was a sunny 56 degree day here in Beaver Creek, Colorado and I was ready to make my snowboarding debut. I woke up with a spark of energy and I was ready to go up to the lift, but first I had to go and get my purple and black snowboard. After I had my snowboard in hand I walked outside. While I was making my way up to the lift, my stomach was flipping 100mph and I saw all of the kids struggling to get on the lift. I was praying to God that I would not fail while trying to get on the lift.…

I looked out over the jagged rocky path we had just labored through, I gazed at the sharp Rocky Mountains in the distance and observed the breathtaking deep blue sky beyond that. Little did I know there was much more to come. We traveled along a narrow path. To the right, a rock wall straight up; sharp and uneven and to the left a steep drop-off with its slippery rocks, it was unforgiving and rickety.…

I saw the ball going low and outside at about 91 mph. I shuffled over, but not quickly enough as the ball caught me right where I did not have padding. I felt the bone dance out of place like a ballerina. I laid there, rolling in agony. After a few seconds the bone shifted back into place and I was yelling in pain.…

The day started on a typical chilly, wet and windy twenty-eight-degree day in March. After school, our lacrosse team boarded the bus to play a scrimmage. During warm-ups, like I routinely do, I looked around for my mom and dad to give them a hello wave. At that moment, the realization struck me. For as long as I have grown up participating in team sports in western New York, without exception, I have been able to count on my parents being there on the sidelines, regardless of their work schedule or the weather.…

The entire experience of skiing creates an exhilarating sense of adrenaline beginning with the chair lift, standing at the top, and the trip down. People wait anxiously; a portion, like myself, are impatient to complete another run; the rest is apprehensive to ski their first. Battling my way through the vicious horde to the loading…

It all started after my friend’s party, where we all went ice skating for her 9th birthday. It was my first ever time stepping onto the ice, a long time before my life revolved around the sport. Even though I had never skated before, my friends and their parents told me that I stood out compared to the other girls. After I realised how much I enjoyed it, my mum decided to sign me up for the learn to skate program, where I progressed through the levels and soon learnt the basics of ice skating.…
