My mom and I watch from the stands while they skate back and forth across the ice trying to score a goal into the other team's net. My dad has taught me about the game. I know that there are five players per team on the ice. The players will run into or hit as they say another player to off set the player's position and or to take the puck away from the other player.
One time, a player checked a guy into the boards, and I had to look away because it looked like a really bad hit. The other guy shook it off and went right back at the puck. It was a good check with no call from the referee. Which gives the other team a power play. Which is more players on the ice than the other team until the player who got a penalty is out of the box.
At times, it gets intense and difficult to keep watch of what they are all doing, as the players move fast across the ice. Sometimes, I see a fight or two when they disagree over a play that was made.
