I was handing out food with Herb at the closed down grocery store. The power outage was really taking its toll. Then in somewhat of a flash we both found ourselves on the first episode of season 19, on my favorite show Survivor! “Umm… is it just me or did we not sign up for this?” exclaimed Herb in a shocked voice. Never Give Up I have faced much adversity in my life. The one time in my life where I feel I have faced the most adversity, was in basketball. Throughout my life I have loved playing basketball, but in ninth through eleventh grade in high school I started to hate it, because of all the adversity I faced. There were many factors that were tied up into all of this too. One factor was that I use to be so nervous playing, that it affected my game in a negative way.…

I can be biased in my own stories and conclude that I have made it through the toughest times anyone could ever experience, but I know that’s far from true. I feel fortunate enough to say that I have not been through the worst, yet the experiences I have encountered over time with overcoming adversity has immensely impacted who I am and how I view the world. Just this fall of my junior year, I made a verbal commitment to play hockey for the Colgate University Raiders. To me, this is one of my greatest achievements in life, not just because it was my top school for D1 hockey, but because of the journey along the way that taught me to keep hope, an open mind, and an open heart. My sophomore year, I didn’t know a thing about Colgate; in fact,…

In my life, I have been blessed to be healthy, loved, and cared for. I do not consider myself to be in a position to say I have overcome adversity when there are many people that truly have. Nevertheless, I have overcome myself and realized who I am. Growing up, I have been surrounded by two cultures: Puerto Rican and American, my mother being Puerto Rican and my father being Scottish-Irish-American. Yet, I felt ashamed of my Hispanic culture, mostly because people never considered me as Puerto Rican by my physical appearance.…

The day that would ultimately initiate the hunger for success was a day that I believed in myself and had faith in overcoming adversity. The week began in my freshman year when my close friends convinced me to try out for the Men’s Varsity Soccer team at my school. At the time, I had never played soccer a day in my life so, of course to anyone I was guaranteed to not make the team. Well, when I went to try-outs, I was struggling to keep up but I would always give it my all.…

I sighed as I looked up to see the 12 foot tall wooden fence. I still didn't have the courage to go through with it. It was a scorching, hot day in Ethiopia, and another day has passed since I had concocted my plan to escape. My house was ringed by a huge 10 feet wall all made of steel except for a little chuck by the back. My plan was simple, climb over the wall so I could play outside, but not while my parents were around .…

In times of adversity I find myself behaving in many different ways. While comparing my life to the story, it seems that I am, at times, in the position of the carrot, egg and the coffee bean. I am divergent when it comes to deciding if I am a carrot, egg or coffee bean. It truly depends on what is happening and what environment I am in. My past experiences changed how I react to difficulties faced in life now. When faced with adversity, I can be stiff and hard inside like an egg, I can get soft and weak like a carrot, or I can change the situation in front of me just like a coffee bean. As I have matured into the person I currently am, I have grown not only physically, but also intellectually. I have forced myself to become more aware of the society I live in and of its ailments, which are homophobia, racism, and sexism. I have come to realize that those who suffer from the oppression of these prejudices are unable to speak out against these issues and truly be heard. I believe that it is important to listen to these people and their experiences so that I may become an ally because others may be more likely to listen to me. Just as Malala Yousafzai has raised her voice, I have raised my voice for those who are not straight, those who are not white, and for those who are not male.…
