After the waitress walked away, she soon returned with our drinks. I sipped my sangria slowly as Mark opened up to me. He was twenty-nine and had been in the military for the past ten years. He got out of the army three months ago and started working at the grocery store. When Mark was in high school, he used to work at the store and transitioned back into the job as soon as he returned home. I felt a little better about Mark’s job situation when he told me that he had an interview at the police department scheduled.

It’s funny, but the first thing on my mind when I woke up was Mark. I wondered if he was having a good day at work or if he’d fallen asleep in a box of bananas. Not only did my hair smell like smoke but so did my sheets. That second-hand smoke wasn’t anything to play with. As much as I didn’t want to wash my hair, I did while I showered.
When I was finished, I blow dried my hair in front of the mirror without my glasses. Seeing myself without my extra set of eyes made me remember to schedule an eye exam. I wondered how I would look with contacts and was a little afraid of taking something in and out of my eyes. After my hair was dry, I applied a small amount of moisturizer to my scalp and styled it. My hair didn’t look to bad, but I needed to schedule an appointment at the salon soon. The ends looked a bit dry after using the high heat setting on the blow dryer today.
Since I already knew that it was hot outside, I put on a pair of ripped shorts that I still had from college. The shorts weren’t too short. However, they did have a lot of rips and tears in them. While I thought about the possibility of one of my students seeing me in these shorts, the thought of tossing them in the garbage came to mind. That’s when I made my mind up.
