Summer Storm at Grandma’s When I was a child I had one of the most terrifying experiences of my childhood. It was summer and I enjoyed spending the summer with my grandma. The summer had been a hot summer in Texas which led to evening thunderstorms. Normally the storms stayed to the south and east of the small town she lived in, but this particular night they did not. I was eight years old and was staying with my seventy-four year old grandma. Watching the weather, I saw a tornado warning for the city where my mom was currently. I picked up the phone and called my mom to make sure she was safe. We talked on the phone for a while and the weather man said the storm was heading towards the town I was in.
After about twenty minutes had passed, we were still on the phone, since I was worried grandma was not taking the storm seriously. It was close now and there was heavy rain and lightning. Grandma did not have a basement and mom wanted to know what we were going to do. After asking grandma, she said we would use her friend’s abandoned cellar across the street, as she was now in a nursing home. Mom suggested we drive over to my aunt’s, but grandma said it was too late now the roads were flooding and we wouldn’t be

While she was deciding, the phone rang and it was the neighbors inviting us over. I was so thankful because I wanted to be safe and now grandma did not have to feel like she was imposing, though; I was also terrified because going outside in the storm seemed dangerous. Grandma cracked a window, due to an old wives’ tale saying it was good to do, and grabbed blankets to take next door. She seemed silly cracking the window, but whatever made her feel safe was okay.
