The biggest regret I had was not becoming a competitive dancer sooner. I had convinced myself that I wouldn’t make the team, and didn’t try out until last year. After being a part of the team for a year, and seeing how much I grew, I decided to perform a solo. The solo improved my technique, and my self confidence. My main goal going into it was to let go of my fear of failure. After almost six months of rehearsal and practice, I was ready to compete. It was a Friday night, and I was sitting at awards with Allie, my friend who had come to support me, and Yiannis, another soloist who performed that night. Instead of talking to them, I was calculating my chances of winning. I knew there were about 16 other people competing in the teen intermediate category. Each had their own style of dance, but I was one of the only one in the jazz category. Because of this, I would receive a first place trophy for jazz category no matter what. All I had to do was listen for was number which I had performed, the dance name, and what place I got in my category. I’ve worked at this (along with another ensemble) for months. After performing the best I’d ever had I thanked the judge and swiftly left the room along with my cousin. Once we were out of ears reach we celebrated as much as we could in a crowded hallway. I ended up getting a 1 (the best score you can get) and the satisfaction of those around me congratulating me. I wouldn’t of had this…

At that age, I wasn’t expected to be good it was more just for the “cute factor”. Right before we went on I was so nervous, and I remember when I first walked out in front of all those people I suddenly froze and was just memorized by all the lights shining directly into my eyes. After we danced I watched the older kids dance and I thought they were so cool because they all did their dance insync. From then on I wanted to be exactly like them…

Was it really true that we would perform in such a big event? We all looked at our instructor, and his face was enough to tell us that this was no joke. He further explained that three other drumline would be joining us, and that we would begin practice at Center Grove High School in the coming month. Placing first in competitions has only strengthened the bond of our relationships. We learn teamwork, self-discipline, and to be the best we can be through these competitions. The moment following our performance during one of the competitions was the most thrilling part of all. The drum major had just cut the band off, and before I could even catch my breath, the applause from the crowd instantly filled the stadium. Hundreds of people were standing, cheering, and shouting our names from the bleachers as we marched off the football field.…

I was petrified that if I did not do something precisely, I would be called out in front of the whole…

As stated before in our first lecture, dance is a living and fleeting art form. I believe that dance is a living art form because it is a three-dimensional picture to art. What I mean by this is that, art is normally seen on walls or as sculptures, but dance is an amazing opportunity to view art while in movement. If you are anything like me, when I look at a painting of two people or many, I always wonder what it would be like to see them actually dancing, singing, or even laughing. By watching dance, it is my living art form.…
