Reflective Essay: No Right On Red

Great Essays
The essay I have decided to turn in for grading is No Right On Red, my personal narrative about my terrifying first experience of driving at night. Although I am quite pleased with my cultural analysis on the emerging phenomenon of the JUUL, there are several reasons why I feel more comfortable submitting my narrative. What it boils down to is that I believe my personal narrative is simply a better essay. The reader’s engagement was a focal point of my writing process throughout the personal narrative. That was always at the forefront of my mind as I wrote. The topic I wrote about naturally lends itself to keeping the reader engaged. Narrowly escaping the death of not only oneself, but many others as well is an exciting topic, and I made sure my essay reflected that. …show more content…
Each set of revisions made my piece that much better. Never before had I done something like the drastic revision process we engaged in. My editing was always minimal. I would maybe throw a comma in here or there or use “thesaurus.com” to cheaply, and probably ineffectively, try to increase the vernacular. I found the drastic revision was much more effective than the my previous editing strategy. The drastic revision was difficult to implement the first time. It felt so unnatural. However, it has gotten easier with each use. I am confident that I am submitting a solid, polished piece of writing due to the extensiveness of editing. The dialogue used in No Right On Red helps sets it apart from my cultural analysis. Coming into the year, dialogue was one of the weakest elements of my writing. It was choppy. It was awkward. It was no good. Because of this, I avoided it like the plague. The 7 Tools of Dialogue by James Scott Bell, as well as several exercises we have done in class have not only greatly improved my dialogue, but have also made me much more comfortable using

Anyone can have an outstanding story to tell, but in writing it can only be manipulated into a work of art with the use of narration. Narrating a story from first person has created the most enjoyable stories. “The Norton Sampler had a wonderful selection of narratives that fell under this category. I enjoyed the structure and layout of Thomas Beller’s “Ashen Guy” and most of Mary Bebane’s “The Back of the Bus.” The two essays gave a decent depiction of the event(s) that occurred.…

For the second essay, I decided to write a letter to Reggie Shaw. Within the letter I wanted to capture Reggie’s emotions, and let him know that his story has become an inspiration for us all. Throughout the read, I also wanted Reggie to forgive himself, and continue sharing his story with the new generation of drivers out there. Additionally, I tried to use sources that I believe would support my claim. Sources that discussed the different types of trauma the brain experiences when under emotional pressure, and sources that talked about the negative effects of cell phones.…

The story I have chosen for this assignment is Sonny’s Blues. Sonny’s Blues has an archetypal theme of light and darkness like many of the short stories we have read in the course. The Archetypal theme however was not my main reason for choosing this story. The reason I have chosen to write and expound on this story is because I felt a deep emotional connection to it when I read it myself and again when we read it as a class. I was able to draw many personal parallel between the story and my own personal life.…

One of the most important thing I have learned in this course that has positively affected my confidence in my writing skills is the concept of writing a “shitty first draft”. In my midterm self-assessment, I discussed how I thought I was among one of the unlucky ones that was not blessed with natural writing skills. However, through class discussions, I’ve learned that one of the most important competent of professional writing is the need for constant revision. Contrary to popular believe, writing does not come easy to anyone. In order to successfully produce professional writing, it is important that one plan, draft, revise, and edit his or her work.…

Chapter two will explore the importance of Dana becoming intimately knowledgeable about the past and the people who existed during that time period. Using trauma theory, I will navigate how the physical and emotional pain that Dana endures causes her to become less disconnected and changes her mentality about the past, which enables her to become more connected with her ancestors. This connection is key because without she would be unable to narrate the novel on behalf of her ancestors without it being colored by her own twentieth century prejudices. In addition to becoming more connected with the past, this chapter will explore the importance of who can be an ideal authorial voice. I explore the way that Kevin is unable to narrate on behalf…

Narrative point of view can impact the story in different ways. This essay will analyse three stories from the reader and explain why the authors chose different point of views and how their choice impacted the reader. Different narrative points of view affect the reader in different ways, in William Faulkner’s ‘A Rose for Emily’ the effect on the reader is one of surprise horror, in Tim Winton’s ‘A Long, Clear View’ the effect on the reader is one of shock and unease and in Zsuzsi Garner’s ‘The Tragedy of Premature Deaths among Geniuses’ the effect on the reader is one of sympathy. Faulkner chose the point of view of the townspeople to create suspense and shock; Winton also chose the second person point of view to create shock with conflicting…

Final Reflection The rewriting process, or final revising process, was much different this time around versus just normal revilement. I had to think of two more creative ways to rewrite a paper abut the same subject. There are only so many new innovative ideas that I can create that is centered around the same central topic, besides experimental film. Having to revise (rewrite) two essays took up a lot of creative juice but eventually I realized I had a lot of wiggle room when it came to rewriting them.…
