During the end of my senior year in High School, an opportunity arose to travel to New York City, with my friend Zach. My school’s basketball team was participating in a National tournament at Yeshiva University, where my friend Zach’s brother had an apartment nearby in Washington Heights. Hearing about the safety issues in the Heights, my parents didn’t want me roaming around the city without any adult supervision. With the backing of my Uncle Richard, who live in the Upper East Side, I began to plan my trip. After giving us all a good laugh, my uncle said his good byes and headed …show more content…

A hemangioma is a benign tumor composed of blood vessels. One such tumor inhabits the back of my right eye known as the “macula” which is responsible for our keenest vision. As a result, I am legally blind in that eye. This condition is extremely rare as I have been told and as I can ascertain from a Google search for “macular hemangioma” that yields no relevant results. The discovery of this affliction has diverted my life’s path to a very unlikely place: The National Institutes of Health.…

From smelling the salty waters by the Florida Keys, seeing all of the green from the stems of green beans growing, the flavor of the freshest eggs you could get from the coop in the backyard, to the avocado tree growing in the backyard, my trip to Florida had become one of the greatest life experiences I’ve had yet. Visiting Florida taught me many skills on being independent, mentally, and how easy and fun it is just to be to yourself sometimes. It all started Christmas eve when I got home to find my presents from “Santa” there before we even went to bed. My parents had planned on taking a vacation to Florida for Christmas break to see my grandparents, but we were unable to also get my parents there.…

Being in New York City itself was all too surreal, like a dream come true. Buildings raced each other in a quest to touch the soft blue sky and people littered the streets and sidewalks. My mother didn’t like the city; she didn’t understand it. My opinion differed from hers. I had never been to a place where I felt so safe and so liberated. I wanted to roam the streets, I wanted to grab every opportunity the city placed into my small hands by the helm, partly out of naivety, partly because I can still remember how I felt like I was finally at home. More so than I ever felt back in our small west Texas town.…
