Introduction

In this essay I’m going to talk about my trip to Macedonia where I meet my family for the first time and talk about how the experiences there changed me as a person as it allowed me to see life from a different perspective and see the different lifestyle and cultural surrounding that is represented there which contrasts heavily from Scotland.

Paragraph 1

To be able to give you an understanding of what this essay is about I feel like its right to begin with an introduction to my backstory. I was born in Scotland but my family are from Albania. In 1998-1999 my family had to move to Macedonia like many other Albanians because of the Kosovo and Serbia war, which was in full force. Even though the Albanian people were guaranteed

Looking back I remember being outside riding my bike and seeing the cemented ground mysteriously fill up with water like an inflatable pool on a hot summer’s day. Now up to this point I had never witnessed a flood or had never been briefed on what to do when there is a flood so my delayed reaction was to turn around and see where the water was coming from. When I turn around I see water flowing down from the street directly opposite from me like uncontrollable water flowing down a stream. I black out any thoughts that were trying to distract me and began running towards the house. I get to the house somehow, swimming my way through to the front entrance and see a re-creation of the opening scene in Frozen where everyone was helping out collectively in order to stop water going into their house. After 3 hours of tug war with the water coming and going the battle was won. Everyone gathered together and came into my grandparent’s house and watched the news to see what was going on as up to this point we didn’t know how or why a flood hit us and we hear that the neighbourhoods around us were still affected and needed help. In the Albanian culture there is a rule that the oldest person in the family makes the final decision on important matters and my grandpa announces to my uncles and cousins to go and help the affected area out. At this point I’m surprised and shocked, as that area is known as a “Macedonian” neighbourhood. Just like certain areas in America are known as “ghettos” and “suburbs” where there is tension between the two areas and the two areas don’t really get along to an extent. This concept exists in Macedonia but to a greater extent where the two areas keep to themselves and people don’t go into these areas if they don’t belong there. I’m a young boy at the time so I ask my grandpa “Why are we helping out the

I have a very standard culture, and I grew up in a very standard home. My culture mixes with the culture of the different sides of my family, as well as the different cultures of my friends and peers, but all cultures I come in contact with are unique and it’s all different and extremely exciting. I decided that, for this essay, I will go back in time to another country to discover how a small Lithuanian family worked together through World War II, and how the culture they were raised with aids and affects them in their journey. The book I read was called Between Shades of Gray, the story starts with Lina, a fifteen year old girl, whose house is invaded in the night and her, her mother, and her younger brother are being deported out of their home, across the continent in train cars. I will analyze the ways that Lina’s culture aided and hindered her, and compare their aspects of…

My umbrella was broken, so I put on my hoodie and tried to run as fast as possible. About halfway to the store, I saw an old woman with a folding walker, trying to get past the intersection while holding her umbrella.…

I was told by my family that a hurricane was coming to my city; New Orleans, Louisiana. Because of this storm, Hurricane Katrina, I was told that I would most likely have to move away for a long time; which meant the rest of my life. The hurricane ended up destroying the entire city completely. This was heartbreaking to me for a plethora of reasons, the main one being that I was so young and was just getting a taste of what the rest of my life had to offer.…
