Trip To Chin Summary And Analysis

In the Spring of 2015, I went to China to experience a new chapter in my life to explore the world and try new things like culture and food. I went with my old high school as a school trip to travel to Beijing, Shanghai and Xi’an. I was able to go with classmates and my older sister and it was scary for us because it was the first time we went on a trip without our parents. To travel across the world at a young age is extremely nerve wracking but luckily I had my sister. She needed me to come on the trip because she is allergic to all nuts, shellfish and legumes and I knew how to use an epipen so she felt more comfortable if I went with her. I was excited to try new food because I heard Chinese food is a lot different than American Chinese …show more content…
Everyone looked disgusted by the sound of eating chicken feet so no one wanted to do it. We all have never tried it before but the leaders said it is popular to eat it in China. One boy in the group decided to try it and immediately he gave it away. After a while I decided to try it because I thought if it is popular here, it must be good. I did not want to be rude and look disgusted by it so I gave it a try. At first I was nervous to try it but then after eating it I came to conclude that I did not like it. I felt that there was little meat so I did not know how I could have enjoyed it. The flavor was not bad but I did keep thinking in my head that it is feet and I felt disgusted by …show more content…
In class 5 I have learned that Food can be tied with Culture and Identity. I have also learned about cultures language through food, “Farb and Armelagos liken a cuisine to a culture’s language-a system of communication that is inculcated from birth, if not before, and is hard to change of learn one you are grown.” (Belasco, 30). Certain foods can be tied with cuisines because of availability, and what people find to be culturally appropriate. In the United States, people typically disgare chicken feet because people are usually not grown up eating it or have seen people eat it. In the other hand, people in China have grown up eating and seeing people eat chicken feet so for them it is socially acceptable. I asked my friend from China if she has had chicken feet and if it is normal for her to see people eat it. She said she has had it and found it to be delicious and if she sees someone eat it she has the same feeling as if someone had noodles, it is normal. Overall I have learned to become more open minded with food because what can be “weird” for some people to eat, can also be normal for others and to look or act disgusted can be

The only taboos present are those that are more specific to etiquette at meals, such as never leaving grains of rice on one’s plate or leaving chopsticks standing in a bowl of food. Eleanor D. Shlenker, and Joyce Gilbert talk about different food options for a Chinese patient in Williams' Essentials of Nutrition & Diet Therapy. Foods specific to the Chinese culture include white rice as a staple item, although noodles made of millet, corn, or barley are often eaten as well. Rice pudding is consumed at breakfast and topped with a wide variety of choices such as vegetables, dumplings, and sauces. For the past week I have been researching on the topic on whether our department should sponsor an undergraduate Economics major at the California Institution for Women in Chino, as part of a larger UCLA prison education program. Through this memo I want to summarize my research and offer some recommendations to the department. Recently, the Education Department has been trying to lift a ban that was executed in 1994, a ban to limit education access to people in the prison. An experimental based pilot program was proposed to replant access to incarcerated person in hopes to give them a higher chance to be offered a job once released from prison.…

Seated on the plane to Beijing, I was thinking all the way on what I did through the past year. My mind went back to the time when my friends and I worked together for Chinese orphans by creating a club. With 100 dollars from donation, I asked several classmates to help me set up a club called ‘Bring Me Hope Club’ to cooperate with a global NGO: Bring Me Hope, to raise money for Chinese orphans and build long-term personal one-to-one relationships with them.…

Health and nutrition have been an essential part of life since the beginning of time, but more recently these topics are shared and examined more frequently than ever, especially in America. In Michael Pollan’s article “Our National Eating Disorder,” Claudia Kalb’s “Food News Blues,” and Karin Kratina’s “The Right Thing to Do?” it is made apparent that how we eat may be just as important as what we eat. These three authors make very valid points about American’s obsession with health fads and negative thinking towards many food groups.…

Food is a fundamental and an ineluctable element of my life, which I am incapable of surviving without its support. I consume a good amount of food on a daily basis to fulfill the nutrition and vitamin needs for my body. However, food contributes so much more beyond being a primary necessity for my life. I was born and raised in China and immigrated to the United States at the age of thirteen. As a result of mainly eating Chinese cuisine, especially white rice on a daily basis for over ten years, I have gained a special feeling of it.…

After a grueling day of midterm exams, I trudge back to my dorm with a few of my friends to drop my school bag off before going to the Michigan Union to eat at Panda Express. Panda Express is one of my favorite restaurants ever, and I always get the same thing: one medium lemonade and one bigger plate with chow mein, fried rice, and a side of kung pao chicken. The noodles and fried rice already taste delicious, but the spiciness of the chicken combined with the two entrees simply explode in my mouth. Anyways, we made our way to my dorm in South Quad, all the while conversing about how each other’s exams went.…

We get a few days off but the rest of the days are hitting the gym early in the mornings for two to three hours a day. The days I have is the best thing in the world because I get to relax and do something fun for once.…
