Personal Narrative Essay: My Personal Experience In My Home Life

Consistency was something I always lacked in my home life. At the time of my parents’ separation, I had yet to form a memory of us as a family. Throughout my childhood, my time was split between two households. Traveling between two homes made it difficult for me to maintain friendships and develop a sense of comfort in either household. My voice was often overshadowed by constant disagreement among family members. I tried to create a balance between living with my father and visiting my mother as she traveled throughout the country working as a travel nurse. Even as a young child, it became my responsibility to maintain relationships with both sides of the family. Through a sea of uncertainty, horses provided a sense of comfort and safety even at a young age.
I had my first experience with horses at the age of five. At that age, a fascination with horses is expected of a young girl. For me, that youthful fascination developed into the only sense of stability I would have in my life. I used horses to escape my family conflicts; the barn was a place that I could feel true happiness regardless of the current

My trainer recognized my talent and determination despite my inexperience. After months of my mother’s labor and sacrifice at work, the next step was finding a horse to compete with on a limited budget. After what seemed to be an eternity of searching for a riding companion, I was elated to find what appeared to be a talented bargain-- a horse whose abilities were promising and price was more feasible. In the coming years, I spent countless hours at the barn developing the horsemanship, riding skills, and discipline needed to excel in the sport. Although my family’s significant financial restrictions made me the underdog at competitions, my trainer’s mentoring and my mother’s relentless support endowed me with the confidence needed to pursue my

Horses have been around since almost the beginning of time. At first they were just wild animals roaming the land, but eventually humans started to domesticate them and use them for different tasks. Before cars, trucks and trains were invented, the horse was the only mode of transportation. People would ride them to get to places, or hook them up to wagons to haul large loads, but after the creation of motorized vehicles, horses became a thing of the past. Nobody wanted a horse, but almost everyone had one for sale.…

The crisp breeze rustled my hair as I walked out of my house on the fall September day with my dad drilling instructions into my head. It was my first Little League baseball game ever, and my dad wanted to make sure it wasn’t my last. Being seven years old and never touching a baseball was something that had scared me; a lot. I had no idea what to think about this foreign, petrifying, game could possibly be about. The car ride from my house was only a few minutes away from the fields where I would begin my baseball career.…

In the summer of 2013, I and my cousin, Jared, got a call from my dad telling us to get ready because he is coming to pick us up to go get a new horse he just bought. We did not think anything of it since it was not the first horse we had encountered this summer. When my dad pulled up in the old one-ton red Ford pickup pulling a 16foot red and black horse trailer, Jared and I jumped in the pickup. After about an hour of driving, we arrived at the man’s house that owned the horse. Once we introduced ourselves we followed the man through the muddy trail to his horse pens.…

I’ve realized in my lifetime that saddling a horse that you are going to ride is not as natural of an act to other people as it is to me. Since the moment I had both the strength and height to lift my own tiny saddle up to the back of my animal, I was saddling by myself. These days in the time that I set aside to ride, I don’t even think about the act of saddling, I could almost finish the act blindfolded. In my realization that not all people know how to saddle a horse and if they have an idea it may not be the proper way, I decided to share my knowledge in this area with others.…
