At the first practice, the band warmed up, and it was no big deal. But when we started playing, it was as though I could hear a whole new perspective on life. We were playing Finale No. 5 by Dimitri Shostakovich, and I instantly confirmed my passion for music. I spent the rest of my night indulging myself in Shostakovich’s works and the impact they had on Germany during World War II. Because of him, I decided that music was my ardor. I know music has been essential to my life, in a good way; it has shaped my ideas and ideals to help me progress into a better person in this world. It has made me grow up to not be as self-centered and over confident in my abilities because I am only human. We all make mistakes and being arrogant is only going to hurt me in the long run. I have told myself that from now on, anything I am working on, especially music, I am going to put my full attentiveness towards it– start to finish. I recently competed at the state level again as a junior and received the division one rating I aspired to get – as well as the coveted title of outstanding soloist by my judge.
