To no avail, it was no escape at all but another season of life. My father being 11 years older than my mother, had experienced life more than, more than she and used it to his advantage. Many years go by, 4 children, still married my mother wanted to continue her education. Being a young mother, she was forced to drop out in the 8th grade so now she was elated. Regretfully saying my father opposed this and my mother seeking employment. Taking a stand, my mother said no more, she was fed up. Just as all odds were against her, she went and took the General Education Test (GED) and passed it with flying colors. She was proud of her accomplishment, as she should have, but when she shared this achievement with her mother the reaction pierced her like 15 bullets to the heart. “You can’t do nothing with a GED”, how degrading. To an ordinary person this may have been their breaking point but my mother is not ordinary. All of the hurt, pain, feeling alone, helplessness, belittling and everything else she experienced did not break her but challenged and motivated her. Shortly following obtaining her GED she gained employment. She excelled so well in her position, she was promoted within 2 months for her outstanding work ethics. Life was finally looking up for my mother, but she wanted to do better to have a great life for her children. With great surprise my mother moved us to a different
