We were competing against Center Grove. They were a competitive team and we weren’t expecting to win. I had mixed feelings about that night. They raised the bar to 4’10”, the school record. I closed my eyes. Don’t freak out. You can do it. I encouraged. I approached my mark and took a deep breath. I ran up and jumped, knocking the bar off. I willed myself to calm down and focus. Tim came up to me and critiqued me. I thought about what he was saying as I made my way back to my mark. This time when I jumped I did everything he said. I cleared by three inches, according to Tim. He raised it to 4’11”. I knew I that in order to break the school record I had to make this jump. He called my name. I looked around me and my whole team was there to support me. My parents and grandparents were sitting behind me. I turned around and walked slowly up to my mark. I jumped a couple times and took a few deep breaths. You can do this. One jump and you’ll have the school record. I urged. I rocked back and forth and back and forth and back and forth to find my rhythm I rolled out my ankle, shook out my hands, and leaned back one last time. And then I was off. Hurtling towards the bar faster than I’ve ever run before. My foot slapped the track and my spikes dug in. I pushed myself upward and soared over the bar. I felt like I was flying. When I landed on the mat, the crowd went wild. I crawled off the mat and looked around. All I could hear was the blood rushing through my ears. I was so hopped up on adrenaline that I didn’t see my best friend come up to hug me. I turned away, and walked back to my mark trying to calm
