My Autobiographical Essay: Sandy Beach

Great Essays
Hi, I’m Henry and I am seven years old. I live next to Camp Gilmore in southern New Hampshire. The lake that surrounds Camp Gilmore happens to be Gilmore Pond. One of my favorite sections of Gilmore Pond is Sandy Beach. You can get there if you walk through a trail deep in the woods. I love going to Sandy Beach with my mom and dad.

Sometimes I go kayaking, sometimes I sit and watch people swim and sometimes I splash around in the shallow end with my floaties. Swimming looks fun to me, but it also seems very scary. Instead of swimming in the pond, I like to skip rocks, and look for fish, turtles and frogs in the water and along the beach. When my parents paddle the boat, sometimes I will sit in the back and splash my feet in the water. I

Dogs look cute when they’re doing the doggy paddle with their arms and legs moving all together. I try swimming like a dog in the tub, but there’s not much room, so I think I’ll try going out in the water with mom and dad.

And that’s what I did the next time we went to Sandy. I wasn’t so good at it, but I did think that swimming was awesome! Every time I went to Sandy, I tried swimming. I kept thinking that if a doggy can do it, I can do it!

So one time, I went deeper. Yipee!!! It was so much fun, so I went a little deeper. “Ohh, THIS IS TOO DEEP, I CAN’T FEEL THE BOTTOM, AND I GOT WATER UP MY NOSE!!! EEEEKKKK!!!!!! Help, help!” “I will save you!” Nicole, the lifeguard

“I don’t know I feel bad, I just wish I could have helped but I realized that I couldn’t swim without my floaties on.
Caroline said, “Ok, well let me help you learn be a more independent swimmer.”

We walked down to the lake and we began our swimming lessons using no floaties. Caroline showed me how to move your feet and hands to stay afloat. She also showed me that when you go underwater you can plug your nose so you don’t get water up it or choke.

Caroline showed me easier ways to do all the things I had been struggling with, and helped me with my fear. She swam out and back next to me and told me to do it again and again. One time, I swam out and looked over my shoulder to see her next to me and I realized that I was swimming all by myself as she watched me.

“I’m doing it!” I screamed to her.

“Good job Henry!” She called back.

I was so happy when I got back to shore.

The next day was the swimming relay contest. It was a big deal. So many people were there and with the warm weather, it made it a great day. Caroline asked me if I was ready. I told her I was, thanked her for all her help and gave her a

I remember my uncle taking my cousins and I to Duns River Falls in Jamaica. At the bottom of the falls he took me from the shallow ends to the deep end, a good area where my head remained above the water if I stood on my tippy toes. My uncle laid his arms underneath me and taught me to relax and float. From time to time he would slowly remove his arms, allowing me to float without his support. I would freak out when I realized that his arms where no longer there holding me.…

What started my love of swimming was when I was at a tender age of three my parents took me to Florida, I observed other kids taking swimming lessons and I decided to start swimming right then and there. On top of that, part of my old school’s curriculum was to have swimming once or twice a week. One of the many reasons why my parents and I moved to Florida was because of my love of swimming.
