There was only two options work to help your family survive or go to school and get some education. My mother chose education while my father chose work. Both choices made them mature and become an adult. My dad was poor his family could not afford education resulting in my father and his brothers to work at the age of ten.
My mother was poor too but her family could afford a decent education. Unlike my father who had to jump in a neighboring river in order bathe. The chancla was a monstrous being. Every little bad thing I did was was a grand opportunity to meet the chancla. The chancla and I were well acquainted, but every encounter sent a stinging sensation on my behind. My parents demonstrated what discipline was and I can assure you I learned very well. “You guys have it lucky” my dad would say” Do you know I was hit for every little thing.
