Personal Narrative Essay: My Journey To The House

Improved Essays
I left the reserve to seek the house of my great-grandchild that I would soon pass the medicine bag onto. I left after his family and him had come for a visit and in that time I had not realized how lonely I had gotten by myself. So I set off for 3 reasons, the first was to find my only living family. The second was because it had become my time and I could feel myself getting weaker and weaker everyday. Finally, the third was to pass on the sacred family tradition of the medicine bag. During my journey to find reach the house of my relatives, I faced many adversities. I started at the rosebud reservation in South Dakota and I had to travel to Salem Massachusetts. I rode a bus for 2 and a half days, cramped and disgusted with people coming and going all the time. Once I had finally arrived in Salem, I was stiff from the long ride and decided to walk the rest of the way. But I had underestimated how hard the walk would really be when you are old and weak, so I stopped to rest on the steps of a building. There a friendly police man had found me and escorted me to a local bus stop where I again had to ride the awful bus. I was taken to Bell View Drive, the street where my great-grandson lived and got off the bus to …show more content…
I had felt confident and proud with Martin now keeping the medicine bad and I knew that he would not let me down. I told him to replace the sacred sage from the prairie in the reserve and to wear the medicine bag at that time along with any other times at the reserve, knowing that he was timid and a little embarrassed to wear it in front of his friends. I had then sent him away knowing that it was about my time and that I was getting too tired and weak to have any further conversations with him. So he left. As I watched Martin walk out of the room for the last time, the only thing I felt was satisfaction knowing that the medicine bag was in good

This July I had the privilege to walk in the footsteps of the Mormon pioneers in Martin’s Cove. Although the Trek was somewhat difficult, I had many great spiritual experiences. While pulling and pushing a handcart for 7 miles a day was difficult, surprisingly, the hardest part of the Trek for me was enduring the 12 hour long car ride back, because I had to ride in the deacon’s car with them singing along to Taylor Swift, and singing the pillow pet commercial theme song. The experiences that I had on this trek were different from the ones I had as a deacon on my first trek.…

The crisp breeze rustled my hair as I walked out of my house on the fall September day with my dad drilling instructions into my head. It was my first Little League baseball game ever, and my dad wanted to make sure it wasn’t my last. Being seven years old and never touching a baseball was something that had scared me; a lot. I had no idea what to think about this foreign, petrifying, game could possibly be about. The car ride from my house was only a few minutes away from the fields where I would begin my baseball career.…

“Avery, do you know if you are you gonna be able to go to Mississippi with us?” The director of mission trips was asking me again. I replied “I don’t know yet, I want to though” nodding my head a little bit. I knew there was a reason for me to go on this trip because he had asked me so many times. Going on this trip was probably one of the best things that I could have done, it impacted me in so many ways, from my faith, to my self confidence, to realizing that what I had was way better than what these kids had and I had been taking it for granted for so many years.…

Paranoia It was about a quarter to eleven in the night when I was trudging along the dimly lit road. It was eerily quiet, and I could hear the sound of the slaps of my feet against the road. My breath coming out in soft huffs as I tried to concentrate to steady the beating of my heart. I never really was the adventurous type. While others kids liked to go out at night and hang out in the woods; I preferred to be on my own curling up against the fire with some hot chocolate and rereading my favourite book.…

It had been a long hot summer and Laura was ready for the change in weather and the change in scenery. Fall was really her favorite time of the year anyway. The cooler weather was also a much better time to make the move from the city to her new home in a quite rural community. The good deal she had gotten on the old farm house sitting on five acres was too good to pass up. She didn’t like the idea that there was only one bathroom, which was downstairs, but since it would only be her living there it wasn’t really that big of an issue.…

I faintly remember the night we left. I rushed to gather a small bag stuffed of my absolute favorite things I just could not leave behind, only to be told to put them back and that I did not need any of it where I was going. My grandmother’s porch light was the only thing that illuminated the pitch black sky. She was watching us leave with a pained look on her lightly wrinkled face. Where were we going?…

The sound of my alarm clock rang loudly and desperately at 7:15 A.M on a Wednesday morning. I remember getting out of bed exhausted and dragging myself to complete my usual morning routine. As I was downstairs eating cereal, my father asked if I heard the doorbell ring or any obnoxious pounding against our front door. I clearly stated no as I finished my breakfast and packed my belongings for school while he went to the garage to start the car. All of a sudden, a loud bang against the front door filled my ears.…
