Personal Narrative Essay: My First Surgery In My Life

Improved Essays
I had my first surgery ever during the summer of 2015. I was sitting at home in my cozy living room and a sense of pain would come across my throat as well as my ears feeling full with water. I asked my mom to look in my throat because every time I swallowed, it felt like a piece of sand paper was scrapping my throat. I remember her saying we should go to the doctor bright and early in the morning because there were white, clammy spots deep in the back of my throat that should not be there. The worst was yet to come.
The next morning came around and my mom took me to the hospital. When we got there, we off course had to check in at the front desk. After that we sat in the clinic waiting room watching kids play with monster trucks and blocks

All I did was loop around the house watch movies and read books. I was looking forward to the next day that I could finally go back to school and see my friends. It was probably only 2 weeks later that I had to do the same process over and had to go back to the hospital and get tested again. Like we assumed again it was positive for strep again. So my doctor scheduled for me to get my tonsils out and I thought it would be easy but it was actually a long process. I had to go to the ears, nose, and throat doctor in Mason …show more content…
My grandma, mom, and dad were all waiting for me in there and I guess I was a little loopy because I kept telling the anesthesiologist and nurses good job so many times in a row I bet they were getting annoyed of me. It worked out good that since I was 16 and a bit older then the average age people get them out they transferred me to the nice rooms on the med surge floor. There they gave me frozen ice to munch on and a lemon ice freeze to slurp on. Although I couldn’t feel the ice going down my throat because it was so numb it still felt good to eat something since I couldn’t eat for about 10 hours. I stayed in that room for at least a couple of hours to drain the anesthetic out of me and to make sure that I could walk

I remember meeting Mr. Stanley his first semester at Ohio State. He wandered in to Denny Hall lost, looking for his English class, so I gave him directions. We had a conversation during the walk through Denny and he told me he was in the Army. I immediately asked him what brought you to Ohio State after 12 years and his response wanted to go to college to become an Orthopedic Surgeon. His reasoning was very interesting to me because, he received back surgery that was the wrong type of operation, so he wanted to ensure this doesn’t happen to other patients by becoming a surgeon himself.…

Last thing I remember was the nurses and anesthesiologists putting a mask over my nose, telling me everything was going to fine, then telling me to count back from 5....4......3 ....... Then everything went black. When I woke up I had bandages over my eyes, I was very disoriented and loopy, and current I was eating a grape popsicle at that movement apparently my doctors were telling my parent that the surgery went better than expected and I didn't have to wear glasses anymore…

Something squeezed my finger feeling like a pinching paper clip. My head was held securely in place, while a white tarp covered my entire body except for my chin. The only sound was a faint squishing sound. 4 hours later the surgery was completed. I learned my lesson that night to always watch where I’m going because another careless fall can lead to another hospital…

I had surgery on the eleventh of November, to repair my ACL and meniscus both ligaments in my right knee. A freak accident it was none the less, ruining my last chance to play high school football or any high school sports for that matter. I was highly looked upon to help lead my team to another divisional championship. Without me there to be a leader and showing my support at practice, I felt like it affected the team negatively. As I constantly gave them hope of a return they neglected the fact that with or without me they were always good and just needed to stick together and compete.…

Two years ago I had to go through an experience that was not only scary but very hard. After hundreds of X-rays and 2 MRI’s the doctors started to notice that something was not right about my brain. After looking over all the xrays and mris they figured out that my brain was too big for my skull. This would have to be fixed with brain surgery and this specific thing is called chiari malformation surgery. Hearing that you will have to be going through such an intense surgery at age 13 was definitely a moment in my life I wont be able to forget.…

During my preoperative experience I noticed many safety checks were in place, not only for the patient, but also for the doctors, nurses, and surgical technicians. Upon entering the room during my perioperative experience, I immediately noticed steps in place that were being utilized to protect everyone within the room. All of the instruments were sterile. Nurses and surgical technicians were counting down to the very last suture to make sure all of the supplies were present. Everything touching the patient or being used during the procedure for the patient was sterile and if the items were accidentally contaminated, then more sterile gloves were put on to preserve the sterile field that had been broken.…
