Max Bultena Mrs. Thill Black 3 November 23rd, 2016 My First Figure 8 Race It was a hot fall night at the Turner County Fair. I smell all the food that I have been eating and all the animals that I have been petting since I was two. I can hear the familiar sounds of children screaming from the carnival rides and I feel at home at the turner county fair because I have been going since I was two for one main reason, to support my dad racing in the Figure 8. My dad has been racing in the figure 8 since I was little. I have always loved sitting in the stands watching my dad race and wishing I could be in one of those cars with my grandparents. I lined up with all the other cars in my heat. I was in the first heat, which was the first race of the night. My car, a 1989 Buick Regal, was …show more content…
My car had smoke coming out of it for the last half of the race. My dad came running over to check on me and my car. I climbed out of my window and threw off my coat because I was so hot. My dad and his friends were pulling all the dents out of my car and I was talking to my mom and my brother about the race. They said that they think I got second place. My car was shot, the radiator was leaking a lot and that means that it wouldn’t hold anything to cool my car down. It cracked down the side so we could do anything to fix it. I now had a very important decision to make. I could both not race and fix my car for next year or I could race and risk my engine locking up, ruining the

I Corinthians 9:24 states, “Do you not know that those who run a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you obtain it”. Throughout my life I have been part many diverse cultures and of many community that contain a wide range of race and ethnicity. I was born in Ecuador and moving to the United States was a huge slap in the face. The culture and the way thing were done here compared to my home country was totally different. The life style in Ecuador was harsh and unpleasing but in the states life was so much more pleasurable with all the opportunities that are given me. The only problem is that people where closed minded.…

To the ones who believe asking, “What are you?” is a valid conversation starter, I am multiracial and proud, but to simplify my ethnicities to others when asked, I identify myself as Asian. I was stereotyped because of how we are perceived in media and society. I spent years cowering in my own skin because others made me believe I was not Asian because of the size of my eyes, the color of my hair, and my personal interests. I was ashamed of what I looked like since I was convinced it embodied who I am as a person.…

When I assert “I am white” it means that I have never had to question who I am as a person based on my race. I have never had to question the way I was treated just based upon the color of my skin. This calls to the social construction of race. I hardly ever have to question my race because I am white. Those of other races often fight internal battles where they question, “Is the reason I was just treated this way attributed to my race?”…

My racial and ethnic identity has strongly impacted my academic development. Throughout my growth, I was constantly reminded by my parents and family that not only am I a girl but that I am also Hispanic. My dad mostly reminded me that because of my gender and my ethnicity, I would have to work harder for my dreams. I grew up understanding the stereotypes set for Hispanics in society, and from a very young age I told myself that I will never allow people to group me into that stereotype. The knowledge that people were expecting me to fail, only led me to work harder in not only my academic setting but also in every aspect of my life.…

I had the identity of a Claremont Academy alumna, a school composed of many ethnic minorities, however, I was also now a student of the College of the Holy Cross, an elite private college. I had never thought of my identity as a student from Main South to be a problem until academic institutions such as Holy Cross kept imposing and cultivating such idea. It was only when I began to network outside of my communities, that I began to realize that I truly live in between two different worlds. What startled me the most was understanding the complexity of why a great gap of opinions existed between two communities in the same city. Furthermore, during the time I began college, I learned how important my racial and ethnic identity was to me.…
