Narrative Essay: Lily's Fight Over Here

Fear is my biggest weakness. Fear of being out there, alone. It was one of those hot summer mornings; a gust of warm wind brushed against my skin. I was standing before an old rusty gate of my new high school waiting for someone. Ever since we moved to California, Lily, was the only friend I had. She had dark hazel eyes that bubbled with hazing richness and expensive taste. Her silky hair was a soft brown, like the bark of an oak tree, not dark but simply gentle in any light. I met her at a dance class a week prior to school; we became best friends.
“Veronica! Over Here!” Shouted Lily. “Excited for our first day?”
I turned around with a look of apathy on my face. “Oh come on Veronica! Don’t be a scaredy cat like you always are,” she spluttered.

“Practice tonight after school; don’t be late,” spat Rebecca.
Lily listened to our conversation the entire time, I could tell she didn’t like it.
“Veronica, you promised to help me decorate my room after school, did you forget?” She murmured.
“I’m sorry, but I’ve always wanted to do this, I’ll help you some other time.”
Lily’s face filled with frustration, she grabbed her books and made her way to the door.
“I can’t believe you’re leaving me again! I hope you like your new friends,” Veronica screamed as she ran out, shutting the door behind her. It didn’t take long for me to realize, I was alone. The rest of my day was miserable. The lonely feeling replaced what was bright, full and warm just hours ago. Part of me wished to go back and change everything. I stuck to the idea that once I was famous everyone would love me and I would never be alone again.
The clock hit three fifteen; my last class was over. I saw Lily sprint into the gym but I didn’t bother talking to her.
“Time is money; put your stuff away and meet me in the gym,” Rebecca

With tears running down my face, I ran out of the gym. My slender fingers pressed into the skin of my forearms, I fell to the floor. My whole body jerked, tears running down my face like a river. Heart pounding so hard against my ribcage as my pulse pressed outward, jerking the veins within. Only one question swam in my mind; was this my fault?
“Are you okay?” The voice sounded familiar; it was Lily. “I’m sorry! Veronica, please forgive me, I never meant to ruin our friendship.”
I was shocked to see Lily laugh. “Oh please, you didn’t ruin anything,” she smiled. “I showed some videos of you dancing to Rebecca; she loved them. You made the team Veronica.”
I was as happy as a clam at high water. “Why -” “I did it because you’re my best friend; also because now you can come and help me decorate my room,” giggled Lily.
I looked at the sign that hung above my head, it read “‘Happiness is like a butterfly: the more you chase it, the more it will elude you; but if you turn your attention to other things, it will come and sit softly on your shoulder.’”
What happened today made me realize, happiness is not always accompanied by laughter, although laughter is good. Not only is happiness unpredictable most of the time, it often is a complete

Happiness, expressed in an everyday sense, is a mental or a psychological state of being sound and well defined by positive energy or joy. One may feel happy in a different manner, and due to a different reason than another. For example, one may be happy to win a million dollar lottery, whereas another may be happy to just to be alive. It is subjective when it comes to interpreting happiness as it differs with every individual. As a matter of fact, happiness compels an individual to embrace their passion and do what they truly believe in.…

“For there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so,” (Shakespeare 250-260). This is how David Gilbert opens his essay “Paradise Glossed", in which he discusses what happiness is and how a person can find happiness in the darkest of situations. To Gilbert, happiness is a positive way of looking at a life. He also argues that people can feel happiness in the midst of a crisis because the human brain is capable of unconsciously warping a situation in a way that benefits it, meaning that people tend to see the brighter side of any situation they are put in. Gilbert’s assertion that human can subconsciously manipulate the facts about any situation to find happiness.…

A Critique of Sharon Begley’s “Happiness: Enough Already” Perhaps it’s safe to say most everyone in the deranged world that we live in today aims for happiness. We are simply slaves to our primal passions, shackled in our endless pursuit of fulfillments and shaping our existence around them. Gravitating towards the concepts in life that bring us pleasure, and recoiling away from those that could cause us pain. Several think of happiness as an overall end goal, while others consider happiness the starting point of being great.…
