His survival was a miracle. He has blonde hair and blue eyes, and he is very small due to his arrival 6 weeks early. When Colton was born, he had open heart surgery, because he had 3 holes in his heart. He also had bilateral hernia surgery which is needed when a hernia is developed in both the right and left sides of the groin. My brother, Colton Gilliam is 4 years old with Down Syndrome. Colton is my hero and influences me to stay strong. That little guy overcame 2 surgeries within the first month of life. It was very emotional and hard for me because I had to sit there and to see him like that was hard. I missed a lot of school due to the surgeries and his birth. I knew he was in good care because he was at Ann Arbor U of M Motts Children's Hospital. He is now going to school and is learning how to speak.

Finally, how he inspires me.

He inspires me to stay strong like he did when he was little. Colton is now 4 years old. Him pushing through the surgeries was hard for him and the family because they took so long to complete. Both took about 3 days to complete. One week he was having open heart, the next bilateral hernia. It was life threatening to him. My personal hero, Colton Gilliam, my brother inspires me to stay strong. So that is how he is my hero and helps me stay strong. Who is your hero? Because Colton is an amazing little man to be able to push through that and come out alive with a miracle survival and be the healthy little boy he

Someone once said “my hero is an ordinary person who finds strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles,” not just for themselves but also to help and inspire others. A hero is someone who does something not expecting a thank you or someone who inspires you. One hero, I look up too is my mother. She is an amazing, hardworking, and the most caring person I will ever know. Although she doesn't have the most paying job, she still can bring food to the table, and anything that we want.…

I always kind of laugh at the question because I don’t view John as a boy with Autism, I view him as my older brother. John is a very special person, and not just because he is Autistic.
