Jesus, does anyone?” For me it was knowing that I’d never have friends like the ones I had at

Your peripheral vision is gone—there’s complete focus, then a silence so muted that all you know is the feeling of your heart beating. Then, as you stand there motionless, you feel the adrenaline. I mean really feel it—a syrup coursing through your veins, yet not a syrup as it moves faster than blood. You know when it hits your heart because it starts beating faster, faster, faster, and then the feeling is gone. Then everything is gone—emotions, breath, sensation……

I went on a road trip to Lake Tahoe with my friends the week after graduation in June. We rented a cabin near the lake and spent four nights kayaking, hiking, and exploring different scenic spots throughout the area. My favorite (and scariest!) part of the trip was working up the courage to jump off a 20 foot cliff into the lake. The trip was a great way to wrap up our time at UCLA, and it gave us a chance to hang out together one last time before we went our separate ways.…

In April of 2012, on a spring break day, my sister and I had no clue that this normal-seeming day would turn into a day full of surprise. Maya, my sister, was four years old with blonde hair and eyes as light blue as a clear sky. Many people said her hair was as soft as silk. I, on the other hand, was seven years old with dark brown hair and chocolate eyes. The morning was a typical spring morning near the beach in Santa Cruz, foggy and cold.…

As uncomfortable and as hard as these moments were to go through, they were the moments that showed me what I valued in my friends. It also showed me that they weren’t the people I was supposed to be friends with. As time goes on I become more and more confident and comfortable with the decisions that I have made that have made in choosing the friends that I have today. We were bound to stop being friends due to the amount of change they undertook in their morals and attitudes and how much I had not.…
