Personal Narrative Essay: Moving To The United States

Coming to America
The year was 2008, that was the year my family decided to move to the United States.
My mother took the decision of moving to the United State at some point between 2007 and 2008 as the economy was deteriorating on our home country, as the days pass the time to board the plane finally arrived, once in Miami it was time to start school and start a new chapter in life. A person life, way of thinking and even personality can change by changing where they live.
The decision of moving to the United States was taken some time between 2007 and
2008. The economy in Puerto Rico was deteriorating by the day, and my mother wanted a change for our lives, she studied nursing in Puerto Rico and it allowed her to expand her horizon and look for a job in Miami. Recruiters from different hospitals in Miami came to recruit nurses to come work for their hospitals, the opportunity was there to move to what I can now call home. When given the news I did not know what to think at first, I would have to go to a new school, make new friends and even learn a new language. I

I spoke some English enough to defend myself, but I was not able to hold a full conversation. The first few months I would ask everyone around me to explain what was said in class and how to do it, I actually gave a whole presentation in Spanish due to not been able to speak English in front of the class. The first year is critical for the developing of your grammar and speaking skills, since I was not able to speak and write correctly I was place in Esol classes. I had a normal 8th grade level English class as well, but I was not taking 8th grade level English, the book they assign to me was for fifth graders instead of 8th graders. The class was an easy A and that’s why I did not mind using a fifth-grade book, but I am now hurting on my English due to that. I now realize that you cannot cut corners when it comes down to your
