On the Ice

“Way to go guys,” Derek said as some of his teammates came of the ice. They had just scored another goal in the game against Wisconsin and the score was now 2:1 with them winning. Yet he wasn’t in goal for this game either. Derek is one of the two goalies on the Lincoln Stars Hockey team and is going to Harvard next year to play hockey, and for school. The past summer he has been working really hard and studying as well as he possibly can so he does good next year at Harvard, which is going to be a tough school that will expect a lot from him. He has also been working really hard at practice ,so that he can show off on the ice and at school, but he isn’t getting lots of playing time on the ice which makes him worried because that's when the scouts and “important” people will be there and if they don't see him play they might think he isn't very good and not want him.

The most recent game I went to was a lot of fun because we printed off pictures of his face and taped them to sticks and yelled at the top of our lungs trying to make his coaches see that half of my family was there to support him and that we wanted to see him play. Unfortunately they didn’t put him in but it was fun to watch his team out on the ice, also one of the referees got a bloody nose and had to take a break from the game which was pretty exciting, If your into that kind of stuff, because it happened during a fight between the two

When I was 15, I was cut first round at High Performance Minnesota tryouts. High Performance is the tryout program that eventually selects the best players in the country to play on the USA U18 National Team. When there is no NHL to look forward too as a woman, I strived to play college hockey and represent the United States of America at the national level. This cut was devastating, it ended many of my friends’ hockey careers, but it only pushed me to improve. Every practice and every game I played was my fullest effort to out work every player in Minnesota.…

My domination of easily breezing by my neighbors in street hockey and always ranked at the top of stat sheets for scoring in recreational hockey, abruptly ended when I joined my first competitive travel hockey team. My first game exemplified the setbacks my fear imposed on my team when I frighteningly moved out of the way of an enormous player to grant him a free pass to the net in which he scored the game winning goal. Shamefully looking at me as if I were an ally of the other team, I became alienated after my team after they began the tradition of…

At some point in every person's life, they will have a special experience that will stick with them forever. One of my most memorable moments happened recently at a home volleyball game against Traverse City West. Approaching freshman volleyball season, the upperclassman spoke highly of the importance of overpowering TC West. As a ninth grader, I had the mindset that I would be playing for the freshmen team. I didn't think it really mattered what the outcome of the game would be, since we were only ninth graders.…
