Make It Fine
From the first day attending that international high school in Shanghai, I known what I need to do is try my best to speak, read and write English as first language. I was anxious, because the only contents for English I learned in middle school was just words and sentences. I never wrote an essay more than even a hundred words and I neither read even a single article more than one page. I sat in the classroom, facing the first foreigner teacher in my life, Mr. Fine. And I known deeply inside that what I had on English was almost zero.

we focus on writing various kind of writing, like narrative essay, argumentative essay and description essay. At very first, Mr. Fine taught us to do brainstorming before writing. This is really a good skill for writing, until now. With brainstorming, I wrote everything in my mind down, so that I could have a clear thought before I wrote. This was a significant strategy for me to start writing long essays. Beside brainstorming, Mr. Fine also taught us many other writing skills. However, only strategies were never enough. To get our interests on writing was the most important part. The most impressive memory in my mind is how he taught us to writing narrative essay. He asked us to make groups and to draw our own stories on the paper, with the beginning, the conflict, the climax and the ending. And then, he asked us to make the presentation about the stories, to tell the class what’s the stories mainly about. As we all finished the presentation, he pointed out that to write a narrative story, you just need to writing down what you just talk in front of the whole class and add some details. This kind of teaching method not only made us learn exactly how to write a narrative story, but also made us feel fun and free during the writing process. During that year, I learned many writing skills and genres. Also, I found my interests during I was writing and I also had the strong willingness to write during that

Throughout the first semester of College Composition, I wrestled with three essays, all differing in format and content. The first was a narrative that reflected our educational experience. After this came an analysis of a visual text, followed by a research paper. The narrative was the easiest to write; however, I acquired important skills for writing the other two, which were in a less familiar format. With the three essays, I learned about my own writing skills and habits concerning development and critical thinking, time management, and organization.…

According to a study done by Achieve Inc. in 2005, fifty percent of students that graduate high school are not prepared for college-level writing (Santrock, 2011, 370). While this lack of preparedness roots all the way back to the beginning of learning how to write, a great deal of knowledge about becoming a better writer can be learned in high school English classes if the teachers apply different writing techniques. In chapter eleven of John Santrock’s textbook Educational Psychology and Sharon Zumbrunn and Keegan Krause’s article “Conversations with Leaders: Principles of Effective Writing Instruction” many best practices for teaching writing are given in hopes to provide teachers with numerous ways to teach their students to become better…

To me, my first enrollment in AP English class at London evidently marked my extraordinary growth. Although English is a mandatory subject in my country’s educational system, few can speak it fluently. My English proficiency was alarmingly poor when I first came to the States. Hence, reading an English book was like crossing the desert for me, writing an essay felt like being locked in a prison cell all day. Unlike reading and writing, oral presentations were even worse as I could not refer to a dictionary.…

Remember the last time you were at a casino and you heard all that yelling at the craps table and wondered “what are they yelling about”, but you never ventured over there because you are too intimidated by craps. You’re not the only one. I used to watch from a distance trying to figure out what was going on, people were throwing chips everywhere yelling all sorts of crazy jargon (“press”, “same bet”, “hard 8”, “odds”) all while the dealers are moving chips all over the place paying people and taking other people’s money. What a crazy and intimidating game.…

As soon as my mother drove away last August, leaving me at the University of Maryland, alone, I began my journey of becoming an adult; at least I feel like I did. I remember walking into the building where I was going to live for the next year, feeling old. “I am a college freshman,” I thought to myself. I did not know what to expect out of my freshman year. They say that college is a time of self-discovery, full of both trials and prosperity, and lasting memories and friends.…
