Somehow, Lydia managed to drag me to a lacrosse game. “Come on Lydia, can't we go home? You know I don't like sports.” “Maybe you're not into sports, but you're definitely into Scott.” I placed my hand on her mouth. “Don't talk so loud, they can hear us!” Lydia chuckled. We sat down on a bench, my eyes scanning the field. I found Scott and it looked like he was almost flying across the field. He was amazing. Scott's parents were, before we were born, good friends. We kind of grew up together as brother and sister, but I always felt more. In 5th grade, a girl gave him a kiss on his cheek. I got really angry and tried to take Scott away from her. They were standing close to each other, too close. I kept looking at them, until another player knocked me down. I groaned and coach walked over to me. “Are you okay McCall?” “Yeah, I'm fine.” “Get up and continue!” I rolled my eyes and stood up. Now, Y/N was so close to him, they almost kissed. I couldn't leave this opportunity. I ran towards the bleachers and walked up the little stairs. “Scott what are you-” I silenced her by gently placing my lips on hers. I wrapped my arms around her waist and pulled her closer to me. The sound of someone walking away, was Aiden's. I let go of her lips and she fluttered with her eyelashes. “I'll tell you everything after the game, okay?” She nodded and I ran back to the field.

We won the game and I even made the decisive shot. Y/N ran towards me and I lifted her up. She giggled and I put her down. “We should go somewhere secluded.” I said. “I have to tell Lydia that I'm going with you.” I nodded and she ran off. They gave each other a hug and Y/N ran back to me.

Just past the Raceway gas station, where the speed limit drops from 55 to 35 on Route 10, stands a narrow bridge that hovers over the James River. As your car veers with the road to the right, the trees disappear and the dark, flat water rests beneath you. The bridge’s concrete and rubber expanders jump your car’s suspension up and down as you slow to enter the city. Along each side, the green trees envelope the shoreline and reach out their bright branches, enshrouded with leaves, to you in welcoming. Once back onto the mainland, a petite mustard yellow sign to the right of the road reads Welcome to the City of Hopewell.…

Flames engulfed my blurred vision as my sobbing, curled up figure choked and convulsed. Oxygen depleted from my lungs as the smoke quickly drew in to replace it. The blazing inferno roared in my ears -- over my piercing screams -- demanding that it be heard. I could feel the intensifying heat, but I was numb to the imminent burns; I was numb to everything. The sky began to blacken, as did my perception.…

It is class night at the Wonderfully Made Foundation for those of us ladies staying in the shelter. I am nervous about class, but excited also because the ladies and staff have spoken highly of tonight’s volunteer presenter. “You are going to love Ms. LaTara” Mrs. Lisa said to me as the kids and I walked in. I thought… I don’t know about that. I’m tired and I just want to be at home or at choir rehearsal, because it’s what I’m familiar with.…
