I was ten years old and Sadie, my sister, was thirteen year old. My mother used to be married to her father, making us half sisters. We both lived with our mom and my dad, however she went to her dad 's house every other weekend. Life was good as I knew it. My family was loving, caring, and seemed like any other happy family until my mother made one mistake that profoundly changed my life. “There’s a girl coming over that 's just about your age” my mom explained to me one weekend while my dad was out of town. I thought that was awesome, getting a chance to make a new friend. The girl, whose name was kayla, and her father, Jacob, entered our home. After a short greeting, Kayla and I were off playing with the many barbie dolls I had in my room while Jacob and my mom hung out in the living room. I came …show more content…
The court issued Sadie and I to live with our mother and on the weekends that Sadie visits her father I also would visit mine as well. My mother rented an apartment for the three of us to live in. A sense of excitement came when I found out there were cool features like a pool and workout room. After getting well settled into our new apartment my mom confirmed that her and Jacob were now dating. The weekends I wasn’t at my dad’s house I would spend hanging out with Kayla. A few months later, my father unexpectedly picked me up from my mother 's and took my things with me. “You’re coming to live with me now” he declared. On the weekends that Sadie and I were not at the apartment, with the help of Jacob, she began drinking and using drugs. In behalf of my young age, I was told that my mom just wasn 't stable enough. A year passed and my mother got better. I was able to visit my mother every Sunday afternoon as long as the visits were in a public place as well as supervised by an employee of child services. As of today, I may see her all day long on Sundays unsupervised wherever I would

There are approximately 397,000 children in foster care in the United States of America currently and I used to be one of them. However, foster had not even been near the forefront of my mind that summer. The summer before I started my first year of high school, I had plenty of anxiety about the tall tale I invented in my own mind that stood before me. Stories about how hard high school were numerous and often regaled on the crowded bus ride home by high schoolers who seemed to have the knowledge of every wise teacher in history combined. which that scared me to death; I had always held my position as a good student who followed the rules of my middle school.…

What I believe would have helped me during this time was getting a pet, volunteering, spending more time with my parents, and attending after school programs. My parents refused to get me a pet, but I believe that would have helped me feel less lonely because I would have had someone to play with. Additionally, volunteering would have let me help people in need and at the same time filling the void of feeling bored and lonely. Furthermore, this would have let me invest in the community and would have given me a sense of purpose during this down time in my life. My parents spending more time with me and doing more activities would have helped as well, but my dad worked during the day and my mom worked the night shift…
