On a cool September afternoon in the late 1940s, he stepped up to the plate. The thunderous sounds of boos filled the entire stadium as the lone black player stood tall in the batter's box. Fans, of both teams, belted beer bottles and boxes of cracker jacks onto the field. A chant of “hit the nigger” echoed throughout the ballpark. The catcher made his signal, and the pitcher stared down the batter with an evil eye.…
In the poem Casey at the bat is talking about a town`s baseball game. He also talks about Casey, the towns hero to kill the baseball. That shows the crowd`s emotional by telling the crowd`s point of view, humor and metaphor. If only Casey could get a whack at that-we`d put up even money".…
When Justin Turner smacked the game-winning home run for the Dodgers on Sunday night, announcers, sportswriters, bloggers and fans all called it the same thing: a “walk-off.” Unknown as recently as the 1970s and 1980s, the term “walk-off” for a game-ending hit has become as comfortable a part of the baseball lexicon as “balls” and “strikes.” And it’s spreading.…
So it finally snowed! I’m happy that it finally did and I built a snowman during the storm and it looks kind of…squared you could say. Since the snow is heavy, more of the leaves are now fallen off and it’s starting to look like winter. Today I went to my grandparents’ house to spend the few nights until thanksgiving. While driving out there, the corn fields and the bean fields were all covered with snow, you could tell that the deer were out and about since you could clearly see the footprints in the snow.…
Obituary of the Good Ole Days Imagine a little league baseball coach- a middle-aged man with graying hair and the faint odor of barbecue sauce lingering on his cargo shorts. He towers over his team of scrappy second graders and looks down with disapproval. Instead of encouraging the children to play to their strengths and enjoy the game, he tirelessly ridicules the young players for having more advanced bats and gloves than he did. Back in his day, he had to make do with a wooden bat and a worn-out glove passed down from his older brother.…
3:39. I remember the time that her mother spoke the terrible words that still send chills down my back. “ Riley, Sheryce has passed away” I dropped to the ground. My lungs burning as I tried to gasp for air.…
This writer loves to eat different foods and enjoys experiencing the cultural tradition of each morsel as it excites my palette. For this discussion, I will share two of my favorites; lobster with drawn butter and gumbo. My family proudly declares they are from the south and cook with precision and care of a five-star chef. Part of the rich culinary tradition is our family gumbo recipe. My family origins are from South Carolina and Louisiana, and the combination of the regions can make a mouth water.…
The game begins, first pitch “strike one” yells the umpire. The crowed starts cheering and my energy level starts to rise higher, I can feel the energy start to take over my legs. The crowd keeps cheering, I jump out of my seat and run over to the dugout to speak the coach. Coach “number 8 is the girl that hits deep to right field but, swings at high pitches”. The coach sends the signal to the pitcher “Strike two” yells the umpire.…
As a young armadillo growing up in Texas during the 1820s, my life was peaceful and happy. The Federalists who held power in Mexico left me, my fellow armadillos, and the Anglo Americans alone to enjoy and work the land. However, in 1829, the Centralists gained control of the Mexican government and the freedom we enjoyed gradually eroded. As the Mexican government imposed more regulations on the Anglo Americans, the tension which had existed between the two groups due to the Nacogdoches land grant, become even more palpable.…
I step up to the plate-palms sweating, heart racing. Two strikes go and now I know I have to hit the next one. The pitcher winds up and “crack!” I’m off to the races.…
Over the summer I went on a great vacation with my family. My entire family flew from Denver to Florida. We took a cruise from Florida to the Bahamas and back to Florida again. After the cruise our vacation continued at Universal Studios in Orlando Florida. It was a fun filled vacation and a great cruise filled with lots of fun activities.…
The butterfly effect states that small events can have huge outcomes. One event in my life has made this very evident to me. One afternoon, while in my home, I heard a thud. I stepped outside, onto my deck to find a cardinal laying there, stunned, under the window. It was clear what had happened.…
Woke up this morning and I thought about you in many ways from beginning to end. I thought about the pieces of the puzzle that connects us so closely; I thought about what makes us so unique from other people in this generation, I thought about the struggles, trials, and tribulations we go thru to remain strong and stand tall no matter what life and the environment throws at us at any given moment. I then thought about the foundations that we were built upon, yes indeed someone planted and nurtured you and you started to blossom and grow; I could recall my process was just a bit similar due to me being created by a man and a woman in the heat of passion. I then thought about how we extend helping hands to family, friends, and sometimes strangers…
Never in baseball has a number been more cherished and respected than the number 42. Today it has become a national icon – a symbol of the past and a treasured reminder for the future. Jackie Robinson changed the game of baseball forever, becoming the first African-American to enter the major leagues with the help of Branch Rickey, the owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers. The movie 42: The Jackie Robinson Story richly displays the career, involving the highs and lows, of Jackie Robinson, and his emergence as one of the influential and trailblazing baseball players of all time.…
