Sophomore year I read a book with a profound sense of alienation and loneliness, called Of Mice and Men. Everyone in the book was alienated, the two main characters, a handicapped man, a man of a different ethnicity, and a woman. Even though they had many people surrounding them they still felt lonely inside. They each had something so small yet so noticeably different that set them apart from the others. As did I. When I was just 7 years old when my parents decided to move to the United States.…

The Path to a Higher Education “Without education, you are not going anywhere in this world” (Malcolm X). In both Frederick Douglass’ article “Learning to Read” and in Malcolm X’s article “A Homemade Education” they discuss the challenges and obstacles that they had to overcome. Frederick Douglass was a man that was born in the horrors of slavery and later became a famous abolitionist speaker in the north. Malcolm X may not have been a man born into slavery, but he was still treated poorly because of his race. X later became a well-known leader during the Civil Rights Movement.…

My series of rather challenging events seven years ago, when my family moved from Myanmar to the United States. I had just turned nine when my sister received news that she was accepted into UC Berkeley. My whole family was ecstatic as we prepared for our move to San Francisco. People tried to explain to me what it would be like to live on the other side of the ocean. Little did I know, San Francisco and Yangon were polar opposites - one a bustling, concrete city and the other a quiet, somber town.…

Middle School Mid-Life Crisis Middle school, a time of cringe worthy moments and regret. I like to refer to this story as my “Middle School Mid-Life Crisis”, since I questioned the purpose of going to school almost every day, and never felt motivated to do anything. Dreading almost every day of school, not having stable mental, emotional, or physical health, and feeling dissatisfied with myself as a student. My mind set was always on countdown mode, “I just have to make it through this class period. I only have 20 more problems to do.”…
