Personal Narrative Essay: Family Is The Essence Of Life

“There’s nothing that makes you more insane than family. Or more happy. Or more exasperated. Or more… secure.” (Jim Butcher). Family is the essence of life. You are born into a family and you will die with one that you have created. Family is the main life support that gives you the drive to succeed, but most importantly the joy to see tomorrow. It was a crisp, sunny day in April. The birds sang and the squirrels played as if they were grateful for another day of life. The smell of bacon and eggs resonated throughout the house and swiftly reached my room. As my eyes slowly opened my foster mother, Pam, called to me, “Brandon! Time for breakfast!” I grunted, for I am not a morning person, and slowly rolled out of bed. I walked into the bathroom and stared into the mirror as if I were a thirty-year-old man dreading another day at work. I scratched my imaginary five o’clock shadow and headed to the kitchen with an eager stomach. As I sat at the large, well-crafted

The facial expressions on Pam’s face resembled those of an audience at a magic show, simply awed. I chugged my orange juice, choked a little, and raced back to my room. Jumping on the bed was forbidden, but I could not help myself with the immense joy streaming through my bones. Today was gearing up to become the best day of my five-year-old life. I began rummaging in my drawers to pick out the best outfit I could piece together. “Red shirt, blue jeans? No too boring.”, is what I said to myself trying to solve the most difficult situation in my life thus far. I felt like I was the President of the United States making important adult decisions. Finally, I found the perfect outfit and was thrilled beyond belief. I quickly showered and went through my usual morning process paying close attention to the minute details. I interviewed my seventy-five year old grandpa Donnie, researched the Voyles lineage book that my grandma Arlene helped compile, and talked with my dad in order to find out more about my family’s history. According to Grandpa Donnie, it all began in 1759 when Jacob Voils, his wife, and his four sons landed in Port Charleston from Wales. Jacob was a poor man and could not afford the family’s way to Charleston. Desperate, he made a deal with the ship’s captain to indenture his oldest son William Voils as a crew hand for four years in exchange for the family’s way. Upon regaining his freedom, William furiously changed the spelling of his last name to Voyles to break all ties from his father Jacob.…

Growing up in a family that did not communicate that much, I was not very close with my mother of father. My mom and I did tend to talk more but not about personal things in our life. Me and my dad however always fought. I have a few good memories with him (he loved teaching me how to make home made biscuits.) which I always enjoyed on those rare occasions he was in a good mood. But, 90% of the time we were fighting.…

Today is going to be just like any other day, I sketched in my morning journal. The morning Baltimore sun shone past the skyscrapers of downtown, and light protruded through the silk blinds that covered half of the picture window in my room. I rose up from my queen bed. The sheets had become untucked and the comforter lay halfway off the edge. My back rested against the mahogany headboard with my head fitting perfectly between two of the wooden posts.…

Reconciliation Interrupted by the faint sounds of birds chirping and grass swaying in the gentle breeze, the calming silence became a distant memory. As the birds flapped their wings, moving at the edge of the tiny meadow, from one tree to the next, they cast their shadows over the body of a small brown skinned, black haired girl. She lay on her back in the hilltop grass, facing directly up towards the almost blinding light of the afternoon sun. Her dark skin, holding a lively warm glow, reflected the rays of sunlight off of her quickly flickering eyelids. Suddenly, they were open, revealing her dark brown almond shaped eyes and her ever so slightly off white sclera.…
