My grandfather did not want to disturb my studies so I was only told when he was already very ill, thus I felt was very important for me to spend his last moment by his side. It was during this time that I first began volunteering at the pediatric department of the hospital he was staying at. My grandfather’s cancer also spurred an interest in nonsurgical treatments of cancer that led me to shadow Dr. Simon Cheng, a radiation oncologist at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. In 2013, in the midst of multiple health issues, my mother was told that she might have breast cancer. Since my father was working in China, I took time off to be with her.…

I think the most common phrase I have ever heard come my mom is “You’re so irresponsible.” What does it really even mean to be considered “responsible?” I honestly don’t think that I have ever been known as being responsible until maybe this current year. I have had a rough life, it isn’t like I want to talk about this sort of topic to a random group of strangers. It’s not like I’m proud of every event that I’ve been through or would even see myself as being strong.…

March 1999, I would never forget when I went to visit my favorite aunt along with my parents in the hospital. It all started with a bump on her forehead and what she thought was a quick visit to her doctor. However to our shock, we later learned that she had a metastatic lesion and needed chemotherapy soon. I was in eighth grade and I remember sitting in her room, listening to her doctor as he explained her condition and treatment. Even though I didn’t understand much, I noticed the doctor’s patience and the expertise with which he eased her fear.…

Pain – defined as the physical suffering or discomfort caused by illness or injury has been apart of my experience when dealing with terminally ill patients and my own parents. As a nurse understanding how to deal with pain, death, and the dying process is extremely difficult and you are always met with the worst sensation in knowing that your patient is in so much pain that there is nothing that you can do to stop it. I recall the many nights when my patients were in so much discomfort that a standard Tylenol 3 pill would not provide any relief. I would regularly advice our doctors to provide more pain relief medication, but I was always told to simply rotate the medication with Motrin. Quite often death seemed like the only time when these patients were finally free from the constant agonizing pain.…
