As I wander out of the subway station, I gaze at the marvelous city of Manhattan. It is a beautiful autumn morning in New York. The temperature is a perfect balance between warm and cold. The leaves that had fallen from the trees are bright and full of life. The air is crisp with a scent of bread and pastries from a nearby bakery. I decide to advance toward the bakery for a cup of coffee.
The past five months have been different. Ever since the accident occurred, I’ve been more appreciative of my surroundings. After that small interaction on the playground, we spent every single day together. We knew every little thing about each other. Everything from our favorite things, to our least favorite things and from our biggest dreams, to our worst fears. However, everything changed after high school. Like most friendships do, ours drifted apart.
I feel a hand on my shoulder as I am knocked out of my reminiscence.
“Saige, are you okay?” Lucas questions.
As I recollect my thoughts, I respond, “Yeah, I am. How are you doing, Lucas?”
“I’m doing great.” He moves his eyes up and down, surveying my body. I feel my cheeks heat up out of embarrassment, making them feel like they are on fire. I hate that we have to reunite like this, with me in my poor condition.
“Gosh, I can’t remember the last time I saw you,” he exclaims.
“Saige!” the bakery employee shouts, interrupting our small reunion. I look over at him and grab the coffee he was holding in his hand.
“Thank you,” I say politely and briskly move back towards the front of the bakery where Lucas is standing.
“So, do you have any free time? If you do, maybe we could go somewhere and catch up?” Lucas asks.
